give it a try. so far it appears to only be a sim lock with a certain type of sim card. though can be another level to the sim lock apart from just the carrier, there can be a lock on which country it can be used as well.

take it to them, say it's sim locked to at&t and maybe locked to the usa, and see what they can do.

you're in a unique position being able to bribe the phone company employees

let us all know how it goes!

No, it won't work, at least not well enough.

Hacking the ICCID on the SIM and some STK tom-foolery *will* allow the phone to camp onto the 'foreign' non-AT&T network but will not allow calls to be made.

Someone tried that yesterday and managed to get the phone onto the network, but no calls...

That image means that you are closer to the solution, isn't it?

it just means that particular way of doing things isn't the correct way. still no closer in other words. it's just damn cool.

actually, you know what that looks like to me; it looks like they defeated the carrier lock, but got hit by the country lock. sometimes there is also a country lock on the sim, in addition to the carrier lock.

i don't suppose you know of a way to get in touch with that person do you?

Hmm. I now wonder WHAT exactly is the iPhone using to detect that this is a valid SIM or not? Is it the IMEI prefix (which identifies the carrier) or the IIN (the number at the back of the SIM card which identifies the issuer of the SIM card) or something else on the SIM?

If I know whats triggering it, I can build my SIM cards accordingly...

Not sure, do you have a SIM forensic utility? With something like that you'd be able to trace the calls between the phone and SIM. As it seems to depend on which type of AT&T SIM you use, my guess is that it's a combination of:

    • ICCID
    • IMSI

There *is* yet another code on the read-only part of the SIM that might be used, but it's very rare to use it for authentication and checking. Only a SIM trace will tell and I don't have the equipment as it's something usually done by SIM-cloners and IMEI hackers.

The thing to note is that *even* if the SIM is hacked around in a way that the iPhone thinks it's valid, the NETWORK WON'T necessarily accept it.
