I recently bricked my girlfriends iPhone after attempting a hardware unlock. I could not get it to power on without a power adapter and when it did, it kept trying to boot with no luck. I had to pick up a dual Firewire/USB cable from Best Buy.

1. Plug the cable into iPhone, computer and a firewire port.
2. Press and hold the home and sleep/wake button until you get the golden triangle.
3. iTunes will detect that it is in recovery mode and prompt you to restore.
4. Complete the restore, make sure you hold down the home button through the whole process otherwise you will get an unknown error (1106).

Did you hold the home button through the whole of the restore process?

I thought it was just during the first 10-15 seconds of boot up
