Default Bricked Phone? Here's how to Restore IMEI

I unlocked my 1.0.2 iPhone then upgraded it to 1.1.1 and ended up with... you guessed it: a brick. The IMEI was bogus but I discovered that if you power off the phone, remove the SIM card, restart the phone THEN insert the SIM card (while the phone is on) the IMEI number matches the carved number on the back of the phone.

This may be specific to the way I unlocked the phone but I encourage all the proud owners of iBricks to try. Normal IMEI means that you can head to an Apple Store and get your device replaced under the warranty agreement. I am the proud owner of a brand new (locked) iPhone.

I encourage users to try this with their iBricks and post their results for all to see. Was my test a fluke?

No, that will work! Confirmed but if they turn the phone off and then back on it will show the fake IMEI again. As long as they don't turn it off your good!!

I've always wanted to do this, but I'm worry that they might restart the iphone again and show the incorrect imei number again. Did you guys have to bring the sim card that came with the iphone to genius bar?

I brought the card with me. In fact, I discovered the trick in front of the Genius. She obviously didn't know the trick. When she first tried the phone, it gave her the wrong IMEI so she told me that it had been unlocked and that she couldn't do anything for me. At home, I had seen the correct IMEI so I knew it could be done. I asked her if I showed her the correct IMEI, would she be able to fix it for me; she said yes.

I thought about it for a second and by deduction figured out that it had to be this way. I powered off the phone, removed the SIM card, restarted it and the IMEI was restored. When I showed it to her, she said no problem. She was very helpful and nice (as the Geniuses usually are) and replaced my iBrick.
