Benefits of SW unlock over HW unlock
Anyone have any ideas what the benefits of the SW unlock would be over the HW unlock when it is eventually released...

You won't be voiding you warranty.

The benefits are obvious. A HW unlock would be extremely difficult to reverse via a firmware upgrade, whereas release 1.04 will probably make IPFS`CommCentre patch obsolete/useless. I have deliberately said 1.04 and not 1.03 since I think that Apple will need a little more time to research and understand how to circumvent what IPFS has done and prevent it from happening in the future.

On the other hand, if they are able to bypass a hardware unlock, it makes all that work useless and that work could cause future problems since a HW unlock can't be undone. Also since the battery is not removable, you'll eventually have to send it into Apple. Who knows what happens then, they may refuse to change the battery.

really? i thought the whole HW unlock thingy is just to simulate some empty area in the flash memory which would cause the iphone to execute some special command or something?

Its likely that the unlock will be reversed in future updates of the Firmware.
As for SW unlock not voiding your warranty, I am not so sure about it. I am coming from Windows Mobile (haha, laugh, laugh), and if you unlock there, your warranty is VOID.
