    Default Benefits of Hactivating for a new AT&T Customer?

    Hello!

    First, let me say I have searched the forum and read the FAQs. I didn't see my question. I may have missed it, but that's not due to lack of trying. (The fact that I put a disclaimer here is proof that I read a few threads )

    I'm on a T-Mobile family plan with an older, unlocked iPhone. For my wife, I now have an OTB 1.1.2, and thus in the pan that fuels the flames. (Word pun )

    My thought is to switch to AT&T. <useless reasons> I've read enough to know about other solutions - TurboSim, waiting for an unlock. But I'm a geek, and I want the newest version of the firmware when the SDK is released - the minute it's released. So the waiting game isn't worth it for me. Let's assume I've weighed the consequences, and my best course of action is to switch to AT&T. </useless reasons>

    <real question>
    What I'm wondering is if there are any advantages to activating the phone the Hackintosh way, rather than the official way. The only advantage I see now is that I wouldn't have to get into a contract, and you'd have the option to skip EDGE and text messages (which I want). Has anyone done this - are there benefits to someone who isn't a current AT&T customer, but is switching?

    The way I see it is I have two options:

    0. Assumptions:
    • I've done my research, and switching to AT&T is best for me because I have no patience
    • I want the $20/month EDGE plan

    1. Activate the phone the official way.
    • $60/month (450 minutes)
    • Better deal than individual options (Similar plan w/o iphone costs $65/month and doesn't have unlimited nights&weekends)
    • Always can have latest, up to the minute, firmware
    • 2 year contract

    2. Get a Pick-Your-Plan AT&T plan, activate it the Hackintosh way.
    • No contract.
    • $75/month ($50 for 400 minutes, $20 for internet, $5 for texts).
    • Would I need to wait for activation hacks?
    • Can go with $40 only plan (not a benefit for me, but could be for others)

    Is there another option? For example, could I get on the $60/month without a contract, or buy a 1 year contract phone, add data, and Hactivate the phone? It's not the best option since AT&T is charging less for the iPhone plan than the sum of it's products ($40 voice + $20 internet + $5 text vs $60 iphone plan).

    And - how long after new firmwares do unofficial activation methods usually take? Would I be stuck in a waiting game if I wanted to update later?

    </real question>

    Thanks!

    I see no real reason to go through all the trouble of hactivating. AT&T can see what phone you are using anyway, so if they have any objections to what you are doing they will not hesitate to contact you. Take it from one of the only members of this forum that's actually on AT&T , it's awesome to not have to worry about that aspect of the iPhone when playing around.

    Thanks for the reply! That's the answer I'm coming to as well. I don't want to sound like an AT&T spy infiltrating the forums, but it doesn't seem like such a bad deal to me. But I'm in the US and want the benefits of a legit setup.

    I'm keeping one T-Mobile account too because one line would have an ETF. So one line will stay up to date with the Hackintosh way

    I have an iphone with the new firmware. I am also with AT&T. I bought the iphone and activated it thru hackintosh way. On my account with them online, I can still see that my phone registered is the ericsson 580i but not the iphone. I have completely block internet with them but continue using wifi at home. My monthly fee stayed the same. No worrying about getting extra fees for internet usage. Love the hackintosh way, feels like I fooled AT&T in such a way. I payed for the phone and the AT&T service. It's up to me if I want to use their extra services or not. Anyway, just my $0.02.

    personally im not from the us.. i live in canada.. and i dont see why everyone is complaining about att.. all in all from what i hear.. it is the best cellular service provider in the us.. and i dont see why everyone is complaining about the 2 year deals.. in canada most decent deals are based on 3 years term .. and plus they are still worse than what you get in the us.. we dont get unlimited data.. and its nowhere near unlimited.. we pay something like 100$ canadian which btw is 1 to 1 to the us right now.. for about 50 mb.. or something like that.. its absolutely redicolous... sure you might be able to save 20$ by having t mobile.. but is 20$ all that much a month so that you have to worry about bricking your phone.. and not having warranty.. to me its not.. and once the iphone comes to canada if it ever will... i will for sure switch to the iphone plan.. im already on a 3 years term so it doesnt really make a difference... however saying that.. i totally think that apple or att.. or wherever the iphone is sold should be unlocking iphones for a fee.. or for free after a certain period of time...if im on a att 2 year plan... i surely dont wanna pay the cancellation fee.. so why not offer an unlock for another 100$ for the people who are on the 2 year plan... so for people that travel a lot can use the phone with different sim cards.. this is beyond me.. and if they charge 100$ for unlocking they can rack in soooo much money its not even funny... just my 0.02

    I don't know about others but for me it has a little something to do with warrantless wire-taps, they are a lap-dog for the government, plus they are pretty much a monopoly when it comes to cable and landline service. just a really bad and evil company when it comes down to it.

    I agree with dimpsogre. I see the same thing. And this is the 2nd phone i "hactivated". I had a 1.1.1 unlocked before AppSnapp came about, and ATT still thought I was using my old cellphone and not an iPhone.

    My question though is - I do want the unlimited data- $20/month and Visual Voicemail. I have a hactivated 1.1.2, and my usual ATT sim. So, without extending my contract, is it possible to add the data plan for 20 a month? Has anyone taken this route before? Please let me know.

    I have not taken this route, but I do have ATT and am curious as well, I thought ATT could tell what phone you were using no matter what, I know I have called them before with different phones that I have bought from friends and they always know what I am on..also I imagine you could add the data plan (although I thought it was something like 50 dollars for unlimited..it used to be anyways..)

    thats true. a normal unlimited data plan still is around 50 or so. I wanted to know if there was a way to have them add the iphone data plan of 20 per month, without having to extend your contract by 2 years. seems like its not possible unless u got a goPhone account (but that means using prepaid, getting a new number, and not being able to use ur postpaid number for that line.)
