Backing up 2G iPhone before update to 2.0 Firmware
Hi everyone, i'm planning to update my software unlocked/jailbroken1.1.3 iPhone(2G) to 2.0 Firmware using Winpwn. So, first i thought the way i could back up all the data i have in my iPhone now, for exemple: contacts, sms, notes, voice records (recorded with VNotes), photos, my .pdf Ebook viewed as marklets on Safari...
Is there any free tool that does it all in one place? If not, any ideas on that subject would be great.
P.D. I'm on PC and don't have any Mac
Sorry to sound sarcastic, but what is wrong with using iTunes to back-up and then return the information back onto the iPhone? Sync before you do the upgrade, then once the upgrade is complete you will get a message asking if you want to treat it as a new phone, or 'restore data from a back-up' which is the one you want to use.
Hmm, on second thoughts, not sure that backs up the SMS, notes or voice records, or .pdf files. It shoud keep your contacts, calendar, Safari, etc. Someone else should chip in here and give you more advice...
Nothing's wrong with it mate!!
Just want to know the best possibility, i just don't actually use iTunes, but if it works for it, great then!!
there is a problem with using itunes
people have experianced problems with using the backup created by itunes (i did when i was using 2.0)
what i did to fix it i used outlook to update my contacts only
MacBook Pro OS X SNOW Leopard
iPhone 4 16GB
iPad WiFi 64GB iOS 4.2
BlackBerry Curve 3G (9300)
restoring from a backup from pre 2.0 to 2.0 can cause compatibility issues later on.. as lots of apps and settings from pre2.0 dont transfer over correctly. best wasy is to start fresh
you can backup your contacts using yahoo or google
things like mail accounts and settings will need to be re entered manually
apps will need to be reinstalled from scratch
not sure about backing up txt msgs
I'm not on 2.0 myself yet, but would it not be possible to use a program like PhoneView to back up data/sms etc. to restore from? Seems to work ok on 1.1.4 and says it's 2.0 compatible... but like i said i havent tried it... may be worth a go though?

just SSH into the iPhone and save the
SMS.db.. the same can be done for contacts and notes. when u upgrade to 2.0, put them back the same way.

I wouldn't use iBares for a major firmware update. It simply copies the entire /var/mobile/Library folder (the one holding your personal data and settings) and later puts it back. This is fine for backups within the same firmware version, but it's bound to create problems across updates. The places where things are saved, the types of settings saved, and the formats of the databases often change in new firmware versions.

There's no ready-made solution. Best is to make a backup of the Library folder an put the minimal number of files back by hand (using SSH or something). When I upgrade, I will only restore:
- /var/mobile/Library/AddressBook/AddressBook.sqlitedb and AddressBookImages.sqlitedb (your addresses will only partially sync with the Google and Yahoo contact databases, and probably without the associated photos)
- /var/mobile/Library/Calendar/Calendar.sqlitedb (although if you sync your calendar to some other calendar, this isn't necessary)
- /var/mobile/Library/CallHistory/call_history.db (There is some risk in this; I don't know if call history has the same structure under 2.0. I'll probably check that first, after making a few calls)
- /var/mobile/Library/Keyboard/... (the personal keyboard corrections -- only if this looks to have the same format on 2.0)
- /var/mobile/Library/SMS/sms.db (after a check to see if the formats match)
I will input all other settings (including mail accounts) by hand.
Applications from 1.1.x don't work on 2.0, so it's useless to back them up.

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.
Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
* on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
* on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).
Correct. I'm the author of iBaReS and it's not possible to restore the settings from 1.x to 2.0 because the structure has changed completely.
All other things like contacts, sms and recent calls, photos should be synce'd/restored via iTunes (contacts of course syned with MAC address book or Outlook). I had no problems with that.
As Jim said, all 3rd party apps don't make sense to restore anyway because they won't run.
However, a backup of your current iPhone with iBaReS does make sense, so you can lateron still manually copy over things like summerboard themes or other stuff to your 2.0 phone.
