    Default [Australian] iPhone Sanctuary

I have seen a few Australians around the forum that have the iPhone and thought we could share our local thoughts on carriers and iPhone apps to see what works and what dosn't once the iPhone's are unlocked

    Excellent idea

So we have 2 issues - activation and using SIM other than AT&T.

I was thinking about subscribing for a prepaid account using the information on TUAW as I know a few friends in the state who are happy to help me out (eg. address/payments). However, if someone could successfully hack the two barriers I won't go down that route.

mine's on it's way tomorrow. i've looked into the carrier issue, and it seems the telstra network fits the bill perfectly. especially seeing as though it's the only one in the country which used EDGE, and it's the only one in the country which utilises 3 of the 4 frequencies the iPhone can use. teltra's 3g network rides on the 850mhz, whilst the regular gsm networks operate 900/1800. it just seems logical. i'll be able to let you know once i get the thing, have it activated and throw in my 3g teltra sim.

also, check this out for activation:

requires ms .net but worth a shot.

Unfortunately for us, even if/when we can get iPhone unlocked, what are Telstra's data rates again?!

I had (have) a Windows Mobile 5 phone that I simply stopped using for data over EDGE because the data charges were so excessive, at least on my plan.

Rate charges of something like 22c session connect then 2.2c / KB.

When you consider the smh.com.au homepage with a lot of photos often has data that exceeds 200K, that would make it over $4 bucks just to see the latest news headlines on iPhone! Do that a few times a day and you're not going to be rich.

Even just checking email worked out to be almost a buck a day.

Now, these can be absorbed into a monthly plan if you have a high monthly spend, but one way or another you're still paying that rate at the end of the day.

I stayed with Telstra for the rural coverage, but my investigations a while ago seemed to suggest Vodafone had charges about a tenth of these, plus the availability of an "unlimited" plan, which used to cost $50/month.

Vodafone is only GPRS I believe, which is even more painful than EDGE, though it might be enough to check email, browse non-graphic rich pages, if it was compatible with iPhone.

But, since I'm probably out of date, what are Aussies spending on their GPRS / EDGE data?

Just a thought: wouldn't it be funny if AT&T's overseas roaming charges (esp unlimited data) were cheaper than Telstra's domestic rate!

(They couldn't be though... could they?)
