Apple Warranty on activation-bypassed (NOT unlocked) phone?
Hi,
I bought a iPhone back in september, but was told that my voice plan was not elligable for the iphone Data plan add on (it has some international roaming built in). So, no problem, i already have a ATT plan and I added the MediaWhatever unlimmited data plan, and then used my old ATT sim in my iPhone. I activated it using iNDependence.
Now my iphone is dead. It will not charge, and it will not turn on. The phone was not dropped, no water damage, no nothing. The battery died yesterday, so I went to plug it in overnight. This morning it still wont turn on. I tried the USB cable, the AC charger, my brother's iphone charger, etc.
I made an appointment to see a genius. They tried everything and it still wouldnt work, so they started the process to get me repair/replacement. However, as soon as they saw my iPhone was never activated with ATT, they refused to help me.
At this point, i think I will try and do it over the phone. My plan is to claim that i bought the iPhone in september as a gift for whoever. Ill tell them i took it out before giving it to the person and wanted to activate it and charge it overnight. When i went back to pack it back up, it was really hot and wouldnt turn on.
The question is, will they buy it? I mean, I have proof of purchase that i bought it in september, but im saying i just now unboxed it? ARgggh, this is so frustrating. I wanted an iPhone, i payed apple their money, i pay ATT their money (20 bucks a month, exact same as i would if they let me just add iphone data plan to my existing plan). Now my iPhone is geniunly broken through no fault of mine and they wont fix it?!??!
If anyone has any tips or advice, please let me know. I will probably call apple customer service early tommorow morning.
Thanks,
SaberSHO

activation is not necessary for the warranty; this is stated on the apple website. try to find the info before you call them (or even go to see them)...be adamant that they honor the warranty. if you go to see them and they refuse, ask to speak to a manager (again, stating that activation isnt necessary)
additionally, you could just say you bought the iphone in september (or whenever) and wanted to wait until your current, non AtandT cell phone contract expired before activating the iphone. tell them it wouldnt turn on when you finally took it out of the box. give it a shot.
good luck

haha, I liked the couldnt get out of my other contract story. and it worked. They are honoring the warranty through shipping (i couldnt go to an apple store for a few days). I just really hope they have to replace teh whole thing and or have to wipe it during the repair process, cause right now it wont boot, so I cant unjailbreak or remove the 3rd party apps.
<crosses fingers>
Thanks for the advice vancity
