Anyone cancelled AT&T and paid the 175$??
Is there anybody in here who cancelled his ATT contract after the first month and paid the 175$ fee?
Because that would be an interesting legal situation. If you cancelled and paid the fee, is AT&T due to unlock the phone? (here in Germany the carriers have to...)

No, they don't. Let me explain: you can pay T-Mobile to get an unlock code from them but the contract stays in place, you still have to fullfill it.
After the contract ends (usually after two years), they provide the unlock code for free.
AT&T doesn't offer an unlock code for money and I doubt they'll ever will, judging by the response I got from them lately when I made an inquiry about my GoPhone plan and international roaming (blocked with GoPhone plan).
Guys, why do you all waste your time thinking about "funny" unlocking methods when the SOLUTION is pretty easy? Donate some money to the well known development team and I bet that latest in a couple of weeks, we all have happy faces.

To save you a little bit of trouble: AT&T does NOT unlock the iPhone for you, even if you cancel the contract after 30 days. You need to pay the early termination fee of 175 USD and you can keep the iPhone you bought.
The iPhone still works with AT&T only, so if you want to use it as a phone too, you need to make a contract with AT&T again. That simple.

donation was done but I HATE WAITING
but still, the legal aspect is interesting, especially with the funny jurisdiction in USA (like cat in microwave and coffe by macdonalds)
. There's a rumor that apple is going to get sued for not communicating that the battery of the iphone can only be changed by apple..

Let me see what the iPhone sales package says:
"Requirements: Minimum new two-year wireless service plan with AT&R required to activate all iPhone features, including iPod features".
"Wireless service and some wireless features are not available in all areas, see www.att.com for service availability."
"Battery has limited recharge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced by Apple service provider."
Apple and AT&T apparently assume that everybody who buys the iPhone can read.

you right, but we are speaking about cancel the plan, not buying the phone.
if you buy it you agree this stuff.
then you decide to cancel it. (described in the sales package, as well)
when this happened youīve got a brick, if apple/att even deactivate you phone.
this is the question!
