Default Anybody working on Perian for iPhone?

Has there been any attempts or even thoughts at bringing Perian or something similar to iPhone, so that we could play AVI's without having to painstakingly transcode-and-sync each one? I'm curious if this would be a HUGE EFFING DEAL, or just simply a recompile for iPhone that would plug nicely into whatever version of QuickTime iPhone runs.

This is only speculation but I would think that a simple recompile of something like Perian would not be usable. It would need to be optimised or rewritten to use the dedicated h.263 and h.264 decoding chip as much as possible to ensure adequate performance and minimise battery life.

This is of course assuming that Mobile OS X has support for quicktime plugins.
