So I've been reading some wikis scattered over the place (chronic-dev, wikiee.iphone-dev, etc..), and I am curious as to how the dev-team originally jailbreak the first firmwares. I know they're secretive, but I figured since this was a while back, they may have released the information.

Like, for example, did they intercept the USB communications from iTunes to the iPhone and get the key to unlock the DMGs from that? Or did they figure out what img2 file contained something? I'm really just curious about the specifics, since I'm sort of just trying to do the same thing on my own for fun, and I'm wondering where to get started.

I think they started with "intercepting the USB communications from iTunes to the iPhone" and sure this way will brick many iPhones...at least that's what they used to do to obtain the "secpack" when a new baseband is out.
