    Default [All Firmware] How to add custom carrier bundles and symlink even without jailbreak

    Installing carrier bundles via ipcc file and iTunes only worked for us if the carrier is one of Apples partners. Reason is simple: You need a symlink inside /Sytem/Library/Carrier Bundles/ aswell, it's name has to be put together from the carrier's MCC/MNC.

    Here is a solution that includes the symlink. To create the special ipcc you need to be on a Mac (at least only tested on a Mac). Try on your own risk, working here perfect for me, btw.

    The advantages are:

    For all users at fw 2.x or (later) 3.x:
    No need to jailbreak the iPhone if you want to use a custom carrier bundle

    For users with 2.x firmware:
    No more fiddeling around with PwnageTool payloads or WinSCP/PuTTY (Windows) or Cyberduck/Terminal (Mac).

    For developers with 3.x firmware and a factory unlocked iPhone:
    As long as there is no jailbreak available you are able to use carrier bundles with your favourite carrier that allow Tethering/MMS ...

    For users with firmware 3.x (later):
    Easy beef up your iPhone 3G with tethering and MMS even if you carrier does not allow it and even if the iPhone is not jailbroken.

    For users with factory unlocked iPhone (fw 2 & 3 later):
    Finally get rid of the "call forwarding" message without jailbreaking the iPhone.

    For me:
    I can beef up my webservice (http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/f146/48683.htm and Carrier Bundle Generator iPhone FW 2.2.1 & PwnageTool 2.2.5 / Quickpwn 2.2.5) providing a solution for Windows & Mac, no Pwnage or SSH required.
    The solution is not in place right now, will be in about 10 days, fw 2.2.1 only.

    How to create the special ipcc:

    You have to have a custom carrier bundle (in my example o2_DE_custom.bundle) of your provider (Not-Apple partner) and do know his MCC/MNC in my example 26207. There are many threads on how-to

    On the Mac create a folder on the Desktop called "Payload". Place the carrier bundle inside.

    Fire up the Terminal and
    Code:
    cd Desktop/Payload/
    Check for the invisible file .DS_Store inside with
    Code:
    ls -al
    If you find .DS_Store inside, type
    Code:
    rm .DS_Store
    to remove it.

    Then type (in my example)
    Code:
    ln -s o2_DE_custom.bundle 26207
    then
    Code:
    cd ..
    and last not least
    Code:
    zip -r -y o2_de.ipcc Payload/

    Fire up iTunes, connect the iPhone and hit option-Update (Mac) or shift-Update (Windows) and select the ipcc. Carrier bundle and symlink get installed immediately and work the second they are installed.

    Isn't this real fun?!

    its real fun but the linking is not really needed.

    Just name it Payload/Unknown.bundle and tell the Bundle which SIMs are supported:

    <key>SupportedSIMs</key>
    <array>
    <string>26202</string>
    <string>26204</string>
    <string>26209</string>
    <string>26203</string>
    <string>26205</string>
    <string>26277</string>
    <string>26201</string>
    <string>26206</string>
    <string>26207</string>
    <string>26208</string>
    <string>26211</string>
    </array>

    With this method you can stick in any of those cards and even add custom MNC's and MCC's.

    Those up there should cover all german mobile carriers.

    Good day.

    Yes it is. The unknown bundle is there for good reason: roaming situations. Dont fiddle around with the unknown carrier bundle.

    you can tell the bundle to include

    <key>IntlDataRoamingSwitch</key>
    <true/>

    for a switch inside "network settings" and even:

    <key>IntlDataRoamingExceptions</key>
    <array>
    <string>26206</string>
    <string>26207</string>
    <string>26211</string>
    </array>

    to exclude the MCC's and MNC's you'd like to disable :-)

    The discussion is really old if you search the forum. I'd not recommend fiddeling with the unknown.bundle, this did not change. It is possible and always was, old story. But again, dont do it if you dont have to.

    Yeah ...
    Thanks Volkspost.
    V. is right, don't mess around with the unknown.bundle.
    The nice thing about this is no need for JB.

    I've been trying to get my Apple-sanctioned-unlocked phone some MMS and tethering love since I installed the 3.0 beta earlier (ok, MUCH earlier) this evening. I am frustrated.

    I've tried a number of different methods to get a custom carrier bundle onto the damn phone, but I can't seem to do it. I imported my phone from Singapore, but I use it in the U.S. on T-Mobile. I'm using a custom carrier bundle that I made, that by all accounts, SHOULD work. It doesn't. When I found these instructions, it was like manna from heaven, but alas, I'm still starving.

    I have followed the instruction to the tee, but nothin'. My iPhone 3G, running the 3.0 beta, will NOT update to this latest Carrier Version that I'm forcing on it. Rather, attempting to force on it. I'm running the latest version of OS X, and iTunes. I've included the *.ipcc file I've built using these instructions, and other sources for the correct info for the custom carrier.

    Can anyone help? Please- this is driving me crazy.

    Hmm. Is the iPhone factory unlocked, did it work with any carrier before at fe 2.2.1 without using jailbreak, Yellowsn0w?

    Yes, the iPhone is factory unlocked, and I've never jailbroken the phone. It works with any carrier, any SIM card in all versions of the software. No matter what I seem to do, the phone stays stuck on Carrier Version 3.1. Does that help?
