[Advice] Unlocking without jailbreaking
I have an AT&T plan that is grandfathered from about 5 years ago. It's an amazing plan that I don't want to change from. The SIM is from the old AT&T Wireless, before they switched to Cingular and then back to AT&T again.
Is it possible to unlock the iPhone without jailbreaking it as well? Also if I only unlock it, will it cause any problems with the 1.1.3 firmware or will it cause any problems with any of the features/programs?

Yes it is possible but there is really no drawback in jailbreaking, just don't install 3rd party apps if you don't want to.
By the way, your old ATT sim will probably not work with the iphone, therefore you have to unlock it or get a new sim under your current plan. You could try to deactivate your phone and then call them and tell them you lost the sim and you want them to send you a new one.

By the way, unlocking 1.1.3 is not really possible at the moment unless you choose to do the hybrid 1.1.2 baseband/1.1.3 operating system way.

Yeah, I realize that my current SIM won't work without unlocking. I plan to unlock. But, if I buy an iPhone next week and it has the 1.1.3 FW OOTB, then I'm screwed as there is no current unlock method for 1.1.3?
Also, what is the purpose of jailbreaking it if I'm not planning on putting any 3rd party apps on it?

You should also not upgrade to 1.1.3 if you have a 1.1.2 OOTB as that would result in pretty much the equivalent of a 1.1.3 OTB phone, so no unlock yet.
Jailbreaking comes hand to hand with activation and the ability to patch the lockdown file which is necessary for a working phone besides the unlocking process which takes care of the baseband part.
If you have a 1.1.2 OTB phone you only have two options right now, either buy one of those sim addon cards, or do the hardware unlock which involves increased risk.

So I can't just downgrade the firmware first and then try to jailbreak it?
This all sounds so complicated. I'm going to be in the US in 1.5 weeks. Odds are it will have FW 1.1.2 or even more likely 1.1.3. Is there any point in even buying it? Has the iPhone Dev Team announced that they've figured out or are close to figuring out how to jailbreak and unlock a 1.1.3 native iPhone?

Jailbreak will be possible for 1.1.3 but unlocking not so sure.

That's useless for me then. :/
Does the iPhone Dev Team have their own site/forums by any chance where they announce new updates as well as progress?
