[Advice] Obtaining warranty support in the UK for an unlock US iPhone
I bought an iPhone from the US in September 2007, before it had been released in the UK. It was never activated with AT&T; instead I hacked it to work on T-Mobile. It has worked fine until recently, when a small band of the screen stopped being responsive to touch - a known hardware flaw. This prevents me from using the keyboard, or calculator or even entering a new contact number.
I understand that hacking the iPhone voided my warranty (although I think this is severe douchebaggery on the part of Apple, given that it is a clear hardware fault not due to my software tinkering).
What are my options? I have considered the following:
1) Using the iPhone as an iPod, and attempting to forget it ever had phone functionality (*sob*)
2) Taking the phone into the Apple Store and admitting it was hacked, but trying to get repair by pleading with the employees: I'm a poor student, I'm a faithful customer, I bought it when it wasn't even available in the UK and had to hack it just to use the iPod functionality.
3) Virginizing the iPhone. It's on 1.0.2 firmware. It was never activated, but this does not affect its warranty status. However, I am worried that (a) it has obviously been hacked, given that I've owned it so long and (b) I can't even prove that the touchscreen is faulty if it's in an unlocked state.
What would you advise that I do?
Well I am in some similar situation.
i am form US but currently studying here in mexico
i started having trouble with one of the volume bottons ( Volume - )
the botton lost the click down action, and was extra sensitive.
so it started to get continualy pressed, and so i had to be constantly pressing the Volume up botton so i could still make my calls
it's really hard to read Pages from safari or PFDreader ( i do lots of reading with med school exams coming over) so i cant see because i have this big Icon on the middle of the screen constantly going volume down.
that was until this last weekend when i think, of all the time i have been pressing the botton. the up botton suffered the same fate.
is stuck and now there is a battle between the Up Volume Forces and the Down Volume Forces. and now i realy dont know what to do.
is constastaly going up and down.
not able to read at all.
having hard time having a conversation over the phone.
so you get the picture
i have the same problem.
Need for it to be fixed/ by warranty but don't know how to convinve the guys from the apple store to send my iphone to the Repairs Shop and have it fixed
so guys what are your experiences having your iphone fixed?>
do they ask if you have activated it yet??
do they ask for your number??

Yes, here is the reciept and this is the Iphone's hardware problem....
sure no problem.... come back for it in 5 buisness days. and we will call you. for the pick up.

Well I'm going to go this week to the Apple Store and see what the situation is. I'll report back here. I fully expect to get turned away but I really don't have anything to use.
For me, this will be a testing ground for Apple and how they treat their customers. It's a documented hardware failure; their fault not mine. If they turn me away, I don't think I'll buy from them again. I mean, they did this sort of thing with the old iPods, where the HDD failed within two years for perhaps a majority of 2G models but their crappy warranty only covered a year.
Here, their hardware has failed within seven months!
They will most definatley turn you away without a doubt. You don't even have an O2 contract, they are more likely to take the phone from you and not give it back!
Yeah you're probably correct - except about stealing the phone from me! That would be a monumentally stupid thing to do, it would probably end up in the papers etc. (Actually that would probably work well for me as in the ensuing PR crisis Apple would buy me a macbook pro *sigh*)
