No other product update has ever gone quite like this either. I don't recall a shortage of iPods before they were all updated to their current lineup.

The theory that Apple has gone soft on us and has actually started looking out for the customer is BS. There are much better solutions to the "i bought my iphone 2 days before it was upgraded" problem than stopping production and sales completely weeks and weeks in advance of the actual release.

This shortage is really nothing more than that infamous Apple marketing style. They're creating above-average demand for what will surely be a more expensive iPhone when it's released. Psychology 101, everyone wants what they can't have.

yeah, not to blow holes in your well crafted-post or anything but:
    1. you dont have to put things through FCC after you announce it. most companies tend to put them in before.
    2. you put "upgraded" components in an existing device through FCC. if the 3g chip is the only hardware upgrade, there are already PLENTY of chips that are FCC approved out there.
    and
    3. if you havent heard anything about the FCC approving anything from apple it could be more likely because Apple has asked them not to do it until after the device is released.

and i seriously doubt this is anything more than just a case of Apple turning their attention to producing enough units of the 3g iphone to put out in june(may?) while people are still out buying the current 2.5 model. you dont usually see this with new ipods because they dont really get the attention and demand that the iphone has gotten. they probably also stop making older ipod models months before the new models hit the shelves but since the demand isnt so high, they still have plenty in stock to sell right through the release of the new models.
and i doubt the new models will be any more expensive then the original price of the first models. with higher storage, of course. (which would even things out a bit)
now, as for ATTs unlimited data package prices....... well, that's another story.........

"I don't know if you guys are following the "We need to talk." thread anymore. Just a heads up that I received confirmation from Jobs himself that the next iPhone firmware update is definitely going to make every effort to keep us from installing 3rd party apps."

    instant classic.

Dont tell anyone, but I like your theory better

I wouldnt mind a 32gb 3G GPS 3MP+ model even if it were over $700, mainly because thats the amount I have set aside for launch day right now
