Default [Advice] If you don't officially Activate then you don't officially Register....

I think i am correct in saying that if you 'h'activate your iphone (not legitimately activating with att, o2, tmobile, orange, etc) then your phone isn't registered with apple....

... therefor Apple have no record of the transaction except for your sales receipt... so you cant claim on applecare?

Someone correct me if im wrong.

Yes credit card details will show when/how/prove you purchased it but i am not sure that apple will accept this....

...I have read that people have been turned away by apple as there was no official activation record, thus apple suspect that the phone has been unlocked or jailbroken therefor rendering any warranty (applecare agreement) void.

I simply post this as a warning to everybody unlocking their phones at present.

I do not think any of the current unlocking solutions post 1.1.2 otb are safe enough to risk. Once DEv Team release Project PWNAGE then maybe people should consider it, until then fingers crossed that you dont f**k your phone up with the current solutions.

    Good luck to all.

I think you should read the terms of your warranty. There is a limited warranty that applies to all iPhones, whether registered with an "official" carrier or not (I can't remember if it is 30 or 90 days). Any longer protection from Apple only arises if you have activated your phone with an approved carrier.

(This is my understanding of the US status; it is of course possible for laws in other countries to give iPhone purchasers additional rights).

I had a problem with my iPhone (the serial number on the phone did not match the sales records or the number on my iPhone box), and Apple happily accepted and exchanged it approximately 1 week after I purchased it. My phone, of course, is IPSF-unlocked to work with T-Mobile US, Orange UK, and Vodafone NZ.

So three or four months down the line when your phone crashes due to a bad unlock attempt and seems to be beyond repair using software.....

    ....or

you have unlocked it and have been using it for months and then there is a unforeseen hardware fault, so you restore to factory state....

then take it to apple and voila no record of activation, past the 30 or 90 day return policy, say goodbye to a lot of cash for a nice new iphone.

Lets hope by that time the new 3G iphone is out so no worries! lol

    LMAO!!!!

Applecare is the name of apples standard or extended warranty.

No warranty = No repairs from apple.

What am i getting at....? The fact that impatience is getting the best of a lot of iphone users and bad advice seems to be increasing exponentially.

I would wait for the Dev Team's PWNAGE custom firmwares before attempting any unlock past 1.1.2.

Thats only what i think, NOT what i know nor what i advise, only what my opinion is.

I only felt that some should be aware of potential unlocking pitfalls that many seem to overlook.

Applecare is the greatest cs there is but in the unlikely event that a JB unregistered iphone needs service, we might be out of luck...

For three years I owned my unabused powerbook, I have to use the applecare three times so my thinking toward Apple product is great design, solidly built but.... A bit fleaky on engineering sometimes.

How long after you purchased it did you replace the original?
