I have searched and read many posts regarding apple's warranty.
I know that apple post on thier website that activation is not required to get warranty, but manay people who actually went to apple store saying that they didn't get warranty service because thier phone is not activated with att.
Yet, many people still say that I can go to apple store without att service!!
Apple clearly says that if phone is unlocked, warrnaty will be gone too.
Then, how would we know iphone has problems if it has not been activated?
For example, my case, I have microphone problem that people can't hear me during phone calls.
Me: I go to apple store to claim warranty service saying people can't hear me.
Apple : Let me test it. Oh your iphone is not activated cause I can't make any phone calls to test it.
Me: yeah, but still...fix it!
Apple : How would you know your phone has problem if it s not activated.
You must have unlocked it and used it for other service.
Get the hell out!
So, what is the truth about their warranty?
I want some feedbacks from people who actually went to apple store please.
I don't mind activate my iphone with att if I have to because I can cancel it right after I get my replacement phone.
Aslo, can apple tell actual activation date? My phone is 4 months old, and I will activate it day before I go to apple store.

"Get the hell out" - LOL, that's some funny stuff, no matter what I doubt it will come to that.
Well, here's my take on the issue again, and your situation -
First of all, they can tell WHEN your phone was purchased, but I don't believe that the genius bar staff has access to the information about when your phone was activated. However, if you activated with itunes, apple will for sure have this information, but like I said, the tech helping you at the genius bar will not. I highly doubt that anyone would ever encounter a situation in the store where they somehow retrieved that information and confronted you with it.
Now, I understand what you're saying about having a non-activated phone and telling them that the speaker didn't work and them wondering how you knew this if it wasn't activated. They will wonder too, honestely - anything other than walking in with an ATT number and an activated phone with ATT will raise suspiscion.
Many people have said that you don't need ATT to make a warranty claim, or even have an activated phone, which - according to the apple website sounds true, but if you are trying to make a claim in store, the geniuses won't recommend replacement of your phone until they can test it, and for that it must be activated, and for that you must have ATT - See what I'm getting at ?? I don't know if the genuises have a way of activating a phone just to test it if your don't have ATT service, for instance you could say that you had it, restored your phone and canceled due to being frustrated. I HIGHLY doubt this though, as that would raise a lot of suspiscion, and from my experience with them, they will not even come close to going through those lengths even if they had the capabilities. They will expect you to come in with an activated device ready to test, even if it's not working at 100% capacity. That would sort of be like comign in with a blank computer with no OS and asking them to fix it, they would at least expect you to have the maching in operational status, so they can diagnose. And worse then, they could ask "what was your ATT number?" and immedetely expose you as a fraud. Not too good either.
There may be some type of mail-in option, which you can just mail in an un-activated, or freshly restored phone, and apple themselves will test and fix or replace it. In this instance the only thing you could say is that you had your ATT service, and canceled it after being frustrated with your broken iPhone, and you just want to a replacement and then you will sign up again. I'd REALLY like to see some people who have experience with this mail in process POST about it, because all of my experience has been with the store.
So, I think the bottom line for the store is that you have to have ATT to follow the process of replacement through the genius bar. No ATT + No activation = No way to test and suspicion = No replacement. That is the formula at least for the store.
And with respect to that, I think that your best bet is to like I've said before, get ATT and cancel.
There may really be something to this mail in process, like I said, I have no experience in it, and I'd like to see people post about it. You may also want to explore that.

So they would be more likley to replace the phone if it is just Displays flashing Colors on startup?
I'm in the UK and I had the same problem is you (Mic wasn't working), I took it in and said that I bought it as a present for a friend and they had told me it wasn't working then said it had been restored to protect information. Got it replaced then and there.
