    i tried editing the Sounds.strings and opening it with notepad or wordpad and it comes out pretty much garbled, i can make out names but i most defintely dont think i can edit, save and put it back on the iphone.
    do i have to decrypt this file or something?
    i'm on 112.

    Default SMS tones Repository

    Guys + Girlz,

    I'm creating a sms tone repository at my site. I have created 1 just for the fun of it, but i need some input from you all.

    The first 20 mails i receive with a sms tone attached, will be added to the repository.

    If i have some extra time i might make some more sms tones.

    You can get hold of the rep @ www.iphonefreakz.com

    Hope to hear from you all.

    Is there a hack/technique to increase the volume or change the alert for 2.0 phones?

    Not trying to resurrect this post, but some new information on this might help...

    I addition to editing the /Applications/Preferences/{language}.lproj/Sounds.strings file and adding the following:
    Code:
    <key>ALTERNATE_6</key>
    <string>Newtone</string>
    <key>ALTERNATE_7</key>
    <string>Newtone2</string>
    <key>ALTERNATE_8</key>
    <string>Newtone3</string>
    It is necessary to edit the /Applicaitons/Preferences/Sounds.plist file as well. This file denotes which titles are valid and can be read from the Sounds.Strings file. You must add the Alternative_# in the validTitles, as well as the next number in sequence in the validValues as shown below:
    Code:
                            <array>
                                    <string>NONE</string>
                                    <string>DEFAULT</string>
                                    <string>ALTERNATE_1</string>
                                    <string>ALTERNATE_2</string>
                                    <string>ALTERNATE_3</string>
                                    <string>ALTERNATE_4</string>
                                    <string>ALTERNATE_5</string>
                                    <string>ALTERNATE_6</string>
                            </array>
                            <key>validValues</key>
                            <array>
                                    <integer>0</integer>
                                    <integer>1</integer>
                                    <integer>2</integer>
                                    <integer>3</integer>
                                    <integer>4</integer>
                                    <integer>6</integer>
                                    <integer>7</integer>
                                    <integer>8</integer>
                            </array>
    This has been tested on iPhone 3GS v. 3.1.2. That being said....... While I would guess that whatever new sms-received#.caf files you create are not going to be deleted with any update, I would have to guess that the Sounds.plist and Sounds.strings file would probably break, or at least get reset, with any future updates. However, this is just a guess.
