I had the same problem as the iPhone doesn't enable you to access the SIM directory ... stupid oversight on Apple's part. I got around this by taking my SIM out of the iPhone inserting into my Girlfriends Nokia and then using PC Suite to backup the SIM contacts to the Windows address book. I then put the SIM back in the iPhone and Synced the iPhone with iTunes and selected Windows address book as the contacts source. Not too painful and it did the trick.
