He doesn't have to keep th GoPhone for 2 rears. If he can get it actvated the 999 way, he gets YouTube and can cacel at any time...there is no contract.

I did the 999 about 3 weeks ago successfully. If it didn't work I would have settled on jailbreak...but better to have YouTube now and not wait for another hack.

You can cancel the GoPhone anytime and then you'll have a legtimate working 6g iPod with wifi and youtube...just no phone...which you couldn't have used there anyway.

You pay around 50 USD per month for two years for this GoPhone contract, this is lost money since international roaming is NOT possible with this contract. There is however one advantage: rollover. Meaning: if you don't make calls in a month, these unused calls are credited to the next month and this works for 6 months. Being in the US twice a year, the GoPhone contract isn't a big deal for me since I can use the GoPhone SIM in the US during my stays there.

If you never travel to the US, the GoPhone option is a very expensive way to officially activate the iPhone and have YouTube enabled. Not really worth it because as soon as the unlock is available, the Dev Team may also take care of the YouTube problem.
No worries! I live in the US.

The thing I'd really like to know is what happens after I try the SSN trick and the prepaid option doesn't get through.

One fellow in the thread said he's got a 2year-contract activation, even though he used the SSN trick.

This is specially important to me because I've read in another thread that you can activate the iphone as prepaid through Cingular's customer service. You can call them, tell you are an exchange student with no SSN and they'll offer you the prepaid option. DOes anyone knows anything about it?

Again, do I get to have only one attempt with the SSN trick? Can I still call ATT and try to activate the phone through the customer service (as an exchange student) after I tried the SSN trick?

    Thanks!

Really the trick is to fail the credit check. The all-9's trick was a workaround for that, particularly for people who might have otherwise passed with their real credentials, but AT&T/Apple likely closed that hole because it was causing them too many problems.

Since I don't have a US SSN, I simply signed up with my U.S. mailing address (a business address), and just punched in my Canadian SIN. This naturally resulted in my failing the credit check (go figure ), and I was therefore offered a GoPhone plan instead.

Really, unless they can run a credit check against the address you've entered, and/or can match it to the SSN you've entered, you're going to fail the credit check anyway. Generally a hotel address or a business office address won't be on record against anybody's name (in terms of their credit file), so that's a reasonable starting point.

But did you get the prepaid screen during the activation process?

What's the pricing for prepaid? Is there an activation fee?

Related question, has anyone heard of success moving from a prepaid account to a postpaid without a 2 year contract?

    That I am sure!

I've tried to roam once with a cingular's gophone account and it wouldn't work in at least three countries outside the US.

Hey people, has anybody activated as prepaid calling ATT? I mean, without using the internet activation?

I can only speak of my experience, but for me it was $50 plus tax for the 1st month only. I could then then keep the number for $29.99 per month, or just cancel. So I cancelled auto refill. Without a SIM, my phone still syncs happily to iTunes, talks to WiFi etc etc..

Well... I think I'm gonna try the SSN trick, not sure about using 999, though.

If it fails, can I still call ATT and have my iphone activated as prepaid over the phone?
