    Default Activation/Billing/Unlocking questions

My whole family is signing up for att (4 lines)and i want to get an iphone. Now if I go through att and get some cheap-o phone then go buy an iphone at the apple store, do i have to unlock it? I know that sounds weird, I didnt really get what the sales reps was telling us for she was telling me i would have to have service with apple and att ? I guess cause I cant buy one directly from att, i have to go get one from the apple store and get it unlocked? Or can i just buy a regular iphone that same day and and then activate it online? I really dont want to get an unlocked one. Please enlighten me on this.

    Thanks

Currently, if your new iPhones are on 1.0.2 you can jailbreak and SIM unlock them. If they are on 1.1.1 you can't. You don't get cellular service from Apple, but the 1.1.1 iPhone needs to be activated and the official way of activation is to use iTunes. iTunes will then provide screens that let you set up service with AT&T. AT&T will provide the cellular service and send you the bill.

So yes you can activate using iTunes the same day.

So at the time of signing up i dont need to add any data plans? So when I go thru itunes activation they add the service there? also even with a "legit" ipod can i still use 3rd party programs to add my own ringtones?

Thought to be clear, if you have AT&T as your provider, it is only necessary to Activate the phone to use it (SIM unlock'ing is not required; though you do lose YouTube and Visual Voicemail).

If 1.1.1 is requiring re-Activation of phones, and you do want to stay current, that won't be an option.
