activateMMS2G and infinite boot screen
I have a jailbroken 3G and earlier today I "stupidly" downloaded activateMMS2G on Cydia and pressed reboot. Now the phone is "bricked" and I see that this is a common occurrence. The usual info area on Cydia did not load, so I saw no warning about using this on a 3G. Anyway, I should have researched it first, because now I can't get to some very important files.
Everything I've read says to restore.
What I need is a way to get some files off the phone before restoring. There must be some way to do this. I don't mind if it is very complex.
Other threads have said that "professional data recovery" people could save my data, but I know some of you are professionals... What is it the "Pros" would do? There is no physical damage to the phone, so it's not that kind of data recovery.
I have iphone browser and both Mac OS and XP at my disposal. I'm looking for any method there is.
It's got a 2.x firmware, I never upgraded to 3.0
I was able to get the iphone into recovery mode, but iTunes just says it must be restored to use with itunes. This at least tells me that the computer knows it's there. Is there any other program out there that can access the files while the phone is in recovery mode (with the USB picture pointing to iTunes logo)?
I've lost a full day of work to this and still don't have any promising leads. Anyone that can accept paypal payment and can help me recover my photos and other data, send me a PM. I need to get this done.
First of all: we dont charge here, this is a community.

Run it on the Mac or PC you used for syncing the iPhone. It will restore most data. The backdraft. To later put them back after restoring the iPhone you have to jailbreak it and put the files back.
This is an easy way to save/restore the data you have.
Alternative: You can restore the iPhone then and iTunes will offer to "restore data from a backup". We usually do not recommend doing so cause when going from lets say firmware 1.1.4 to 3.0.1 you'll get back outdated files aswell. In your case you'd have you data back, could save them and redo restore/unlock then with settting up the iPhone as a new device.
There are forensic tools available to direct access the iPhone and save data. Data will be in the same format as the solution using the backup tools. This is the last way out if you never synced the iPhone. BUT: This is really a biiiiig pain in the bu.. Have done this for testing once, ruined my weekend.

which forensic tools would you suggest?

I tried both of those programs but neither found anything to extract.
If you could point me in the direction of these forensic tools I'll start reading up more on them to see if I can handle them.
Thank you so much for your response. A full day of searching and I never found those two applications you suggested. Those will be nice to have in the future.
Have you tried DiskAid? That doesn't require SpringBoard to come up before working, only that iTunes recognises the phone (I think it has to be in normal mode, but recovery might work as well).
16Gb iPhone - Unlocked via BootNeuter
32Gb iPhone 3GS - Officially unlocked
I just gave diskaid a go in both OS X and XP. It never recognized the phone.
I tried it with the phone stuck in infinite reboot and also in recovery mode.
It seems that recovery mode is the only way I get any semblance of recognition and that is just iTunes telling me that the iPhone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored before using with iTunes... but it at least knows it's there.
As I understand it, recovery mode uses iBoot and it at least recognizes the phone is there, are there any other programs that will give me access through iBoot?
I have not explored DFU mode because, as I understand, that will automatically restore and erase my data. Am I right to avoid DFU mode, since I am trying to save files?
I'm currently looking for the forensics tools, if anyone has any suggestions on that front, let me know.
Thanks for the suggestions thus far
Does anyone know if iSpazio has any solution to this? His app seems to lock up 100% of the 3G phones that install it.
It looks like he is from Italy from the website.
I cannot believe it is this hard to salvage data from an iphone...
