No ID required. Just Funds to pay for it.

The same isn't true at an AT&T store (unless changed recently).
On the TWiT podcast, a Canadian had driven 200 miles to an AT&T store across the border. Couldn't buy one because they did a check and needed a credit card with a US billing address...
Definitely go to an Apple Store to buy one. But if you did want to get onto AT&T's network for roaming, you might have problems at the iTunes set up account stage, pre-paid or not. (Anyone seen examples of non-US residents getting a legitimate pre-paid account?)
Hopefully unlocked soon!

I'm Canadian and brought one over the border yesterday.
A few things:
1. You cannot activate on Canadian soil. Your IP won't be accepted. Maybe you can spoof your IP, don't know.
2. You must have a valid US address, including either a real of 999 SSN. It gets complicated.
3. Make sure you declare the iphone at Canadian Customs. Story on another board of a guy who got nailed for 25% penalty on top of the taxes (PST).
4. You don't need any info other than payment to BUY the phone. You pay and leave the Apple Store (dancing with joy?) Activating is another problem. When I spoke to ATT people at their kiosk, they told me it's all done online. They have no power to do anything.

1. I activated my iPhone in Oakville on July 3. I did need an American billing address, credit card, SSN and American iTunes account. It *is* complicated but it can be done.
2. I had no problem buying the iPhone in Buffalo and declaring at the border. Everything (including Edge and Wi-Fi) has been working fine for over a week except I have a US cell number and extra roaming charges.

Read the fine print on the AT&T website, there are rules about too much international roaming - might be different for Canada, I was reading with an eye to Europe - and mechanisms to end contract if you exceed certain MOU and kB outside of USA ( or maybe its North America)

I was reading and believe that in the plan you get unlimited data in Canada and Mexico?
Is this correct?

ok...but do you have a contract or a prepay ?
Because I know that prepay sim card can't do roaming ?
