Hi guys,found this site whilst googling.
basically i have purchased a brand new 4 month old 3gs 8gb but is locked on Orange and on the 4.2.1 update to which the buyer never told me about (just said 4 month old etc). Is it possible to downgrade it,if so how do you do it step by step?

I have read and seen on youtube and googling on forums you can,i download the 4.0.2 software that it should have been on and when connected to itunes and hold shift and click restore,nothing shows up.i cant find the ipsw file.Even tho i rename it at the end .ipsw as told to just nothing shows up whereas when i see it done on youtube the file is there

Does anyone know wether there will be a unthered unlocking jailbrake for it,if so i may aswell wait rather than try sell it on and buy one on 02.

Without a SHSH for an older iOS version, you cannot downgrade to an older version.

Even if you had a SHSH and managed to downgrade the OS. You cannot downgrade baseband - this is what determines the ability to unlock.

This stuff has been answered thousands of times on this forum already.

Your best bet is to contact Orange and find out how much it costs to get the phone officially unlocked by them.

thanks for replying,im a complete noob on the iphone its my first one.I dont know what SHSH blobs are tbh,and i did try searching first but just thought itd be easier to post up.

i have rang orange but because im not the original purchaser they wont do it it would have been £20 otherwise.

i have read on a few bolgs that this dev team have finally released a jailbreak for the 4.2.1 BUT its for the iphone 4 only.Will it work on the 3gs do yo think?

you need to read up on SHSH, it is vital to have control over your saved SHSH if you want to stay jalbrken and retain ability to unlock

There is a public 4.2.1 jailbreak but it's a tethered jailbreak for you, which is not practical.

Also there is the iPad baseband unlock, but that requires you to tolerate the tethered jailbreak and also you can never restore stock/original IPSW again. This is hugely limiting and totally not recommended if you don have a 4.1 SHSH

as for the tethered jailbreak i heard

The neighbour has it at the mo as he's trying to find and wait for an untethered jailbreak for it..

I'm testing the "backup plan" untethered solution, it's still pretty tricky to get working.

how do you mean its hard to get working?

bit of an update after 2 hours of going mad lol:

got my phone back at half 7pm who jailbroke it using redsn0w and installed cydia and told me not to turn it off as it was tethered version,which i knew about and not to go on cydia.
SO i got inside put my 02 sim in and after 15 mins it still wouldnt have a network BUT according to 'Carrier' in the settings it was showing 02 I then thought right i best reset the network,try that.and to my suprise it turned itself off and rebooted and got stuck on the apple logo!
after 2 hours of searching the net trying different ways to get it out of dfu mode even a mate texted saying use tinyumbrella and kick it out of recovery mode,so i did and it couldnt connect i managed to do a hardboot and get itunes to recognise it.(Cos at first apple logo was staying on then turning itself off then going back on and itunes wouldnt even recognise it was connected) but anyway,only way i could sort it was for itunes to restore it before it could connect so had no choice but to do that its now stuck on orange with everything back to normal.

Should i have just waited,was there a way of getting sigal from 02 when it was unlocked? I went on the net via wifi and searched ultrasnow and it was already installed with version 1.2. so the neighbour must have put that on.

Your research was insufficent (and you got incorrect advice from your friend)

Redsn0w 0.9.6 beta offers the "just boot tethered for now" option. This is what you should have used.

Now - here's what you need to do:

1. Check to see via TinyUmbrella if you have any SHSH saved for anything older than iOS 4.2.1 http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/
2. Confirm my suspicion that you have a new bootrom 3GS (I assume your friend already checked or you wouldn't have had to use a tethered 4.2.1 jailbreak otherwise) http://www.theiphonewiki.com/wiki/in...ootrom_version

If you DON'T have a new bootrom 3GS (very unlikely) then you might have more options.

If you DON'T have a 4.1 SHSH, my advice is to wait for more options to become available before attempting to unlock again. You need one of the two following exploits to become available before you should proceed.

• way to downgrade baseband on a 3GS - no idea if anyone is still looking into this

If you DO have a 4.1 SHSH, then you can use the iPad baseband - which is even more limiting than your previous option. This unlock solution DOES work on 4.2.1 but has two limitations that can be avoided by running iOS 4.1:

• issues with GPS (only with 4.2.1 and 6.15 baseband)
• A restore with stock IPSW (this is where you let iTunes restore the iPhone) fails. The only solution is to use custom IPSW and for a new bootrom 3GS, the ONLY custom IPSW that works is for 4.1 and ONLY if you have a 4.1 SHSH. I downloaded redsn0w as i thought ill try that,and it wouldnt pick up the software i installed and i couldnt click anything when it asked me to browse for it,didnt know what to do after that.

I followed directions on how to find bootroom and this is what it came up with at the end:

have been trying to downgrade back to the software that was on it 4.0.2 as i got told i could have gone to jailbreakme on the phone and do it that way,so i downloaded the 4.0.2 software and changed it to .ipsw at the end and i have clicked show hidden files and i found where the ipsw's are BUT it is only showing the 4.2.1 software .When i connect to itunes and hold shift and click restore it only finds that 1 and not the 4.0.2 that i downloaded.

tried attaching pics from tinyumbrella to show you but they came up tiny for some reason.
when my phone is connected it shows only shsh is 4.2.1
when i click show all shsh it brings up my mates 3g shsh to which he has quite a few going back to 3.1
