I downloaded redsn0w as i thought ill try that, and it wouldnt pick up the software i installed and i couldnt click anything when it asked me to browse for it,didnt know what to do after that.

I followed directions on how to find bootroom and this is what it came up with at the end:
    [IBOOT-359.3.2]

have been trying to downgrade back to the software that was on it 4.0.2 as i got told i could have gone to jailbreakme on the phone and do it that way,so i downloaded the 4.0.2 software and changed it to .ipsw at the end and i have clicked show hidden files and i found where the ipsw's are BUT it is only showing the 4.2.1 software .When i connect to itunes and hold shift and click restore it only finds that 1 and not the 4.0.2 that i downloaded.

tried attaching pics from tinyumbrella to show you but they came up tiny for some reason.
when my phone is connected it shows only shsh is 4.2.1
when i click show all shsh it brings up my mates 3g shsh to which he has quite a few going back to 3.1
You are stuck, it is 100% impossible to restore to 4.0.2, 3.1.3 or any OS except 4.2.1. This is determined by SHSH. Apple only signs restores for 4.2.1 now and your chance to backup older SHSH for your device has gone.

I'm sorry to give you such bad news. The iPad baseband technique was clearly marked as "advanced" and it should not be attempted unless you had verified you met the correct requirements (4.1 SHSH)

There are a lot of misconceptions about SHSH. The facts are:

SHSH is unique for each device and OS
Apple generally stops signing SHSH requests for older iOS versions a few days after a new iOS version is released
There is no way to bypass SHSH checks on new bootrom 3GS or more recent iOS devices.
Many people think they can restore the same version that they currently run. In reality they can only restore to what Apple is still signing or a SHSH they have managed to backup.

thought i had goosed it i should have left it alone but like i say when i synched it with itunes it said update available so i just thought ill update it then

Dont know if you can help me but i have installed redsn0w like i said and i managed to select my current firmware (by gettin hidden files to show) i have jailbroken it but it is tethered as you probably know.I then followed a guide on how to unlock it using Ultrasn0w and it worked BUT apart fro the service,it wont register it nor find it.When i go to Carrier in settings it is showing 02 so i am now kinda baffled My firmware version is 05.15.04.Now it asked me to reboot it but i didnt as i didnt want to turn it off lol does it need to be restarted in order for it to work or will it not work anyway?

    Thanks for your help

Glad you have got the phone back to a tethered jailbreak (I suspected that might work)

You now have one chance at an unlock (the iPad 6.15 baseband).

    1. read this: http://www.hackint0sh.org/f204/196391.htm
    2. understand that: Right now, there is no way to restore a custom IPSW onto a new bootrom 3GS (except for iOS 4.1 and a saved 4.1 SHSH). Yes i've mentioned this before - but I want to emphasise it. A new untethered exploit for 4.2.1 is required before this can be possible.
    3. You can't ever restore to stock 4.1 either (no 4.1 SHSH)
    4. If you choose this path and subsequently ever corrupt or break your OS (due to something you install from Cydia) then there is no way to restore your iOS. (unless a tethered exploit is released for 4.2.1 by that time)
    5. There's no way to downgrade baseband once you update to 6.15

If you still want to unlock, knowing that you are playing a game of russian roulette without a 4.1 SHSH - the instructions are here: Dev-Team Blog - Ultra-recycle - use redsn0w to update your baseband.

so basically even tho i have JB my phone and unlocked it (so i thought) with U/S it still wont work on any network? and only way for it to work is with the ipad BB? I have actually read up on that, done quite a bit of research on upgrading it to the ipad bb
Tbh im in 2 minds wether or not to do it,as like you say once done if i experience problems theres no way of getting it back to normal say by trying restoring the BB.especially with me being a noob, with you going on about making custom ipsw's i really havnt got a clue what you mean lol

I purchased the phone on ebay off a woman who didnt like it with it being touch screen, and little did i know after ringin apple to register it they tell me its 4 months old,we were like wow brilliant as you can imagine
I have however requested an unlocking code off orange on the 27th but i have to wait 7-14 days for it via email. So like i say im in 2 minds wether to do it or not

Cheers for the help and advice

    Mike

By panicking and updating to iOS 4.2.1 - you updated the baseband to a version that can't be unlocked by ultrasn0w. Your only way to get ultrasn0w to work is to load the 6.15 baseband (which is actually older but due to Apple's parallel development schedule for the iPad has a higher version number). The baseband update routines only check two things - that the firmware has not been modified (via a signature check) and that it is a higher version number than the current firmware.

Use the official unlock code. Don't load the iPad baseband. That's my advice.
