    Default 3G Upgrade Thought

I was looking a the specs sheet for the SGOLD2 chip or ARM processor and as i have read other posts here talking about the chip being upgradable to WCDMA or 3G.
Under the key benefits section it says

? 3G upgradeable with WCDMA coprocessor

The word coprocessor to me means an additional processor separate to the chip that talks to the original processor. If the WCDMA coprocessor was inside the chip it should say 3G upgradable with firmware or some such garbage or simply say it is WCDMA as well as edge in the first place.

Without a full datasheet and pin configuration i am just sumising.

I guess i'll try and look at the board if there is anywhere to sneak in another chip for future models.

The iPhone doesn't have firmware/software upgradeable 3G support. Period.

You are misreading the datasheet (and you aren't the first). It says it's 3G upgradeable with the addition of a separate coprocessor chip. There is no reason to believe that the iPhone has that coprocessor chip.

No, That was exactly my point, I thought i explained that.

    I didn't mean now.

I was trying to say that the chip is upgradeable to 3G with a separate co processor if apple designed the board so that in the future they could put the coprocessor somewhere and make it 3G then it would be firmware upgradeable. Their factory just places the chip along with the rest before soldering. It comes out as a new model but has the same board. I also do not mean that if you got a 3G coprocessor and placed it in the location (IF one Exists) it will be upgradeable.

This is common in electronic devices to leave chips out for different versions as it saves the company heaps in manufacturing. ie 1 board multiple models

I seem to understand my post perhaps it was written poorly.

Would it not be possible that the main CPU could be used as the coprocessor? I mean 640 MHz is pretty okay for a phone...

I couldn't imagine that the radio itself would require too much processng overhead. It all comes down to how Apple designed their mainboard, and whether it would be possble.

Sure, it does not address how much more power hungry 3G is compared to 2.5G GPRS that is used in the iPhone, but it does avoid too many angry customers. Then when Apple comes out with a new model with the updated mainboard, they can cite power improvements which made it possble to use 3G and get the same battery life as you have come to expect on the Rev1 iPhones.

The coprocessor they are refering to is a dedicated WCDMA processor, inotherwords you cant use any old CPU.

It wouldn't neccessarliy use any more power so i dont think thats an issue.

Only issue is if they thought of 3G in the board design and planned for it. Or just thought a whole new board design would be worth it when the time comes.
