[2G Phone][Fido]
strange think with Fido..
I had 2G unlock for over a year now, accessing Web via my Wifi, two months ago, there was a promotion to get a 3G without changing my current plan.
I used 3G for two days, than put it back in the box, since I was travelling and wanted to take my unlock 2G Iphone..
I noticed on my bill that Fido was charging me data.. right after they shipped me the 3G. so I called and ask them to block data on my account.
now its been two months, when I access Web via my 2G using my Wifi At home, I am still being charged data with Fido, so I called and their response was, people found of hacking in the data, and if my phone goes on WiFi, its possible that it is access 3G steam and useing 3G data from Fido..
Is this possible, I would like to hear from other Fido users 2G is they had this problem with Fido, is this is the way fido penalizing users with unlock 2g Phones?

I'm using 2G phone on fido for over a year, never heard that one. Take it from me those fido reps bullshit a lot and often have zero idea what they are talking about. Sometimes you gotta play a little rough with them to sort things out.

I had the 2g up until the 3g came out and then upgraded and I am also with Fido. With the 2g I was never charged for Data because all the settings were wrong in the phone so it never connected. However if you are using Wifi to surf and you are connecting properly then Fido should have no idea that you are using any sort of data because the data is going thru the internet provider not the fido 2g/3g network. I would call BS on this one and ask them how its possible that you are using data if they blocked your data. If you are being charged a data pay per use charge then it shouldnt be there if data is blocked. However if when you got the 3G and the rep added some sort of data plan without informing you then thats a different story.

you must have upgraded the 2G phone to 2.x. In 2.x the same carrier file is on the 2G as the 3G, thus the phone now has the correct edge settings and whats worse is that you cannot edit them because fido now registeres as a proper carrier.
also another pit fall of this is that the phone now has all the info to access visual voicemail so once you get a voicemail the phone will attempt to retrieve the audio file (and depending on if you have the feature) will fail to get it but it still made the data connection to try.
if you are going to continue to use the 2G on fido at this point the safest thing to do is JB it and go into the carrier files and either rename or delete both rogers and fido folders, the phone will then go back to its pre 2.x ways and concider them unknown carriers.

Thanks for the info. I am not sure how I can rename or delete those bundles? could you suggest a safe way, I have unlocked Jailbroken phone. but I have not SSH installed or BSD installed so first step is to install them.. than what program you suggest I use to go in and rename them? I appreciate your help

once you have ssh on the phone set auto lock to never (this will solve any disconnection issues) and use winscp (google it for a free download) to connect to the phone using the ip and the root/alpine for user/pass and navigate to teh carrier files which i think are somewhere like root/private/var/system/carrier.bundle (should be close to that). there will be alot of folders with numbers and then folders with carrier names. either copy the fido and rogers folders to your hard drive or just rename them ( i would seggest renaming) and then reboot the phone and you should now have editable edge settings or it wont be able to connect, i dont remember what happens.
I dont think there is a backup of the fido carrier in the unknown carrier folder but its possible, i havent looked at the files for a long time. if there is you can solve that by renaming that folder too and it should still be ok.
nothing you do here should really be able to crash the phone, if however it ever did you can undo everything with a restore.

If you want, I can email a file that you open within the iPhone email client. Once installed, it creates a profile that disables the APN. It's very easy to install (no hackery or knowledge of sshing needed) , and just as easy to get rid of if you decide you want to go with a data plan. I've installed this on many iPhones and it works great. Disabling the APN is the only way to be sure to not use data. PM me if you want that file.

There is a package on cydia that enables the data settings option on the phone for 2.x.

it'd be nice if you knew what it was called haha...

Install Boss Pref from Cydia, there is a setting there to disable data.
Make sure you test it, turn off your wifi, and goto safari and see if you can still surf.
