Default 2G - 2 Year old phone - Apple USA - Official Sim Lock Removal possible.

I have a 2G iphone which was bought from an American Apple store more than 2 years ago. I live in Europe. Here in europe after the phone is 2 years old, you can get the phones simlock officially removed so that it will work with all sim cards. I am not talking about all the other hacks/cracks/methods etc I am talking about an Apple approved method which I think happens through itunes.

Is this the case in the US with mine which would be locked to AT&T i think?

    Thanks guys for your advice.

What I have read is that AT&T will allow you to renew your contract and upgrade to a new phone. The old phone can be used as an iPod touch (ie can't make calls).

I have only heard of AT&T offering an unlock in extraordinary circumstances (someone with an iPhone on contract is forced to move overseas for work - permanently) this is rare.

thanks for the reply. As you are the only one that has written something I can only but assume that it is rare if it happens at all.
