You must have OpenSSH installed. Then SFTP into the iPhone with WinSCP (Windows) or Cyberduck/Fugu/... (Mac). Goto
    /private/var/mobile/Library
Youll find directories like SMS, CallHistory... in there. Open them, copy the *.db, *.sqlite etc to your PC. Do the reset then and copy everything back - restart after copying and you shoulkd be set.

cheers volks, i have been experiencing something odd.

i did connect via winscp and on one occasion backed up the sms.db file but i cant recall the exact location, i thought it was private/var/root/library/sms but i may be wrong.

i the reset all data but when i went back via winscp to the same folder sms.db was missing. i sent a text to create the db but no db file appeared, even after refreshes

last night winscp connected fine but now no joy so i am a tad stuck. i'll try again in a bit as right now my swede is hurting.

o/t what filesize should 'other' be in itunes? mine was about 458mb. is this a normal figure? the main reason for the reset was to sort music folder images displaying correctly, and to erase any unnecessary content. on reset the 'other' was still 458mb.

To stay with the example: sms.db is holding your sms history and is to be found in
    /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS/

Asfar as I can recall at fw 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 apple changed that from /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS/. But you are having fw 1.1.4 so the above is correct.

You should have sms.db on your PC/Mac. Do the reset-doodle then. SFTP into the iPhone again and look for
    /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS/

If you cant find the directory SMS, just start the app and send one short message. At least then the directory and sms.db should be present. Refresh WinSCP or whatever SFTP tool you are using. Replace the sms.bd on the iPhone then with the one from your PC (the backup). Once done, immediately restart the iPhone 8red slider to shut off, start again). the history should be back then.

ok winscp has decided to work again (router reboot did the trick)

interestingly i appear to have sms.db in both the above locations

    var/mobile/library/SMS

    and

    private/var/mobile/library/SMS

the file is exactly the same number of bytes and the timestamp is identical.

    how odd.

i have copied it now for future reference.

thanks for you time volks, appreciated mate.

(i have started a new post re: 'other' filesize.)

    Glad to hear it works.

var is just a symlink to /private/var/ so that normal - the same directory
