There is no reason why Apple should make device dependent IPSW.

On the Mac OS X side, They are used to provide us with Combo Universal updates.
Even Retail OS X as well can be Installed on PPC or Intel Mac.

The iPhone and iPhone 3G may have different Hardware parts, i believe there is only one IPSW for all the Series.

is there anyone with the 3G iphone who tried to sync the phone the Itunes and was asked to update the software from shipped "beta" to new 5a347?

do we know where Itunes is looking for an update?
if its looking and finding iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw, but choosing not to update it to Iphone 1.1(2.5G) then there must be a new update coming.

what Chronic is saying makes perfect sense to me, but what do I know....

No...I meant that it only will restore if requested by a 3G iPhone. If you unzip the ipsw, you will notice that it has both the iPhone1 and iPhone3G stuff in it
