Default [2.0] Dead pixel, expired ATT contract

    Hi everyone

I got myself a 1.1.2 OTB iPhone in Dec 07, and had "hactivated" it so that ATT wouldn't extend my contract, which was gonna expire Jul 2008. I noticed that my phone started developing a few discolored pixels in the top left corner (near the ATT carrier logo and at some other spots on the screen).

Now, its Aug 6 - my ATT contract has expired as of Jul 30, 2008. I was eligible for an upgrade (and hence a new iPhone 3g at $199) if I chose to do so. I haven't upgraded. I wanted to return my 8g old Iphone in the hope that I'd get a new shiny 8g (2g, not 3g iPhone) since I don't want to lose my upgrade eligibility. I'm hactivated though.

Any idea how I'd be able to do this? I'm officially with ATT. My Apple warranty won't run out until Dec 08. Should I just legally activate in iTunes and then take it to Apple the next day to get it replaced with an 8g 2g iPhone?

Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Nash

Restore it to factory default without activating with iTunes or comminting to any contract. There are tutorials on how to leave your iphone back to factory state. Then just return it for a exchange and say that you did not have time to activate it or whatever. That should probably work.

do you think i'd have to erase all data on the phone as well (the 2.0 has that erase option that takes about an hour to finish) ? Or should I just use BootNeuter to relock it back, then do a restore and send it away?

Also, silly question to ask - do you think I'll get back a 2g iphone or a new 3g one ? I don't necessarily want to swap mine for a 3g coz its pretty obvious that an unlocked 2g sells for close to $500 on ebay

about the dead pixels, I had a friend with one, and after some forced restarts (as in home+power buttons they reseted themselves or something, and cleared out)
