Default [1.1.4] [Problem] Possible software virus?

    All,

A friend passed me his iPhone where the screen had stopped working. I managed to turn the iPhone off by holding 'Power' + 'Home', then did a full restore to 1.1.4 (via DFU) and ran iLiberty.

The iPhone worked fine (all areas of the screen) then after about 15 to 30 mins the screen locks up again and becomes unresponsive (every part).

I can turn it off, leaving it for a while, then turning it on and it works fully. However only for 15 to 30 minutes again.

Is it possible that he has previously installed some software which causes the screen to lock up, and that this software is still on the iPhone? OR would you think this is a hardware issue?

I've never seen an iPhone that works 100% ok but then freezes after a certain amount of time. The others i've seen just have a constant dead area.

Please reply with any ideas - this is so strange.

Finally, what's the easiest way to connect to the iPhone (1.1.4) for transferring/downloading files?

    Cheers

    You should connect through SSH.
    To do this:

In installer, install "Community Sources" (you should have it, look under the sources tab to see if it is there)

    Then install BSD Subsystem

    Then install OpenSSH

Then, on windows, download WinSCP. On mac Cyberduck or Fugu,

Open the ssh client (the one you downloaded from above) and login with username: root password alpine

It will take a while for your first login (it can take up to 1 minute at times) but all logins after your first are fast

    Hope this helps

you should turn it on and restore it to factory and claim your warranty. Say its a gift and your friend cant activate it because it keeps locking up.

    We've found out more information.

If we turn on the iPhone with a SIM card in it the phone will freeze shortly after booting up (works fine for between 5 to 15 minutes).

However, if we turn off the phone, leave it 10 minutes, then turn back on without a SIM card then it works 100% - we had it running for over 3 days.

Then, as soon as the SIM card goes back in then it freezes shortly afterwards.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be the problem? Hopefully it's not hardware related. We've tried fully restoring a couple of times but the problem remains.

Sending it back to Apple really isn't an option as my friend purchased through eBay and isn't in the US.

    hmm that is realy strange.

try a different SIM, maybe the one he is using is a strange one, and iphone is having trouble reading from it. If that doesnt work, it might be a problem with the connection between the SIM slot and rest of phone
