Default [1.1.3 OTB] Would you buy one now?

IPhone is currently not available where I live in Europe but I am going to have the opportunity to pick one up when in New York in late February.

This, I presume, will be a 1.1.3 OTB and as of now there doesn't seem to be any way to get this unlocked and working with my current provider here.

Assuming there's still no answer by the time I'm going to NY, would people consider it wise to pick one up anyway, on the strength of the unlock / jailbreak eventually becoming available?

I'll probably end up using it with a stealth sim.

I wouldn't buy it... no hope for quick software unlock to come out and still no news on whether the otb 1.1.3 can be used with *sim (stealthsim or similars)

Crap, really? Obviously not what I hoped to hear but I appreciate the response. The only thing I'd say is that I am not in any hurry for the phone, as in I'd be quite happy to buy one and wait a month or two for the crack to become available, and continue to use my phone. But won't go that route if the general concensus is that it'll be uncrackable.

It's quite confusing all the chat on here about people upgrading / downgrading etc so I'm left unclear about whether the majority of people consider an OTB 1.1.3 phone to be a lost cause. From the point of view of prospective buyer I hope not, but it's something I'd like to have clear before even considering the purchase.

Assuming it's still uncracked by the end of Feb, does a OTB 1.1.3 phone function like an Ipod touch when turned on, Or is it utterly useless without some sort of unlocking done to it?

    Thanks!

I'd buy it now just for fun... if I had spare money for another one
When 1.1.2 OTB came out they were locked to death but I still bought one and now it's working great. The same will be with 1.1.3 I'm sure somehow, and fighting vs. System is so interesting

i guess if youre willing to wait 2 months a jailbreak atleast is bound to be out ....which means you should atleast be able to use a **sim. many of the manufacturers like x-sim are claiming to have started to program sims to work with 1.1.3 OTB....but since you dont mind waiting anyway its best to hang on for 2 months and then buy the phone its not like theyre gonna stop production:S...best just get youre hands on one before the next firmware is out....you can buy it as soon as its jailbroken atleast then you can use it as an itouch or with a ***sim.dun hold youre breath for a s\w unlock tho.

This is what I was thinking, but I'm still unsure.

About the IPhone working as an Ipod Touch if it's not activated, is this the case? Can I buy the IPhone, do absolutely nothing to it and still use it as an Ipod touch?

no you have to either officially activate it or jailbreak it using one of techniques presented here. Otherwise you will only be able to turn it on and look on the iTunes invitation and maybe dial *3001#12345#* to look at some info. That is all if you don't do anything.

Damn! And am I correct in thinking that there's no jailbreak for a 1.1.3 OTB? I see there's a lot of talk of jailbreaking a 1.1.3 upgraded, but not much on an OTB.

Sorry for all these questions, just trying to get things straight before buying or forgetting about buying one.

A couple of people mention a software unlock, is this something that people use instead of a *sim solution? Eg. Would I need a software unlock if a *sim worked for me? Apologies if that's an idiotic question!

there is no unlock for 1.1.3 OTB
there is a jailbreak for 1.1.3 OTB (read more to know the difference, people get tired of explaining)
Would I need a software unlock if a *sim worked for me?
would a man need a new car if he has a car already, that works decent?

People are wrong, there isn't a direct and simple way to unlock 1.1.3 OTB, but a way does EXIST. You need to be a little proficient to do it yourself though...

    The steps basically are:

1-Downgrade the Baseband (Use the tutorial at www.hackthatphone.com)
2-Downgrade the Bootloader (This is the famous HW method and requires that you open your phone. Its not that hard, but its scary!)
3-Unlock and Upgrade like you would a prior to week 45 phone. (Oktoprep > Upgrade to 1.1.2 > Unlock with Anysim > Apply New Jailbreak/Upgrade method to 1.1.3)
