if you are on 1.1.3 and installed more than 80 (or sometimes 77/7879) apps, thats what happens.
if not, i have no idea.
if you had wifi + ssh on, try deleting some apps from the applications folder.
if you didnt have ssh on... restore

Ok happened to me at least three times and here's what I did to repair it.
[ONLY IF 100% SURE WLAN WAS STILL ON BEFORE SPINNING WHEEL STARTED]
In case WLAN was off, I'm afraid you'll have to do a restore.
Reboot your phone pressing On/Off button and Home together, when screen goes black, release Home and keep On/off pressed. iPhone will reboot, Apple logo showing, after a while spinning wheel turns up again.
Now, if you still remember the IP the iPhone had, just ssh to the phone.
In case you don't remember it, download a IP scanner tool (Angry IP Scanner is one, free and works a treat) and scan your network for online hosts.
Your iPhone will be in that list. Unless you have a huge network, your iPhone will be easy to spot, maybe the name you gave to it will be in the list of the scanner.
Now, once you know the IP you can finally SSH to it (root/alpine being userid/password).
You'll finally be on the command prompt. Now issue the following
cd /Applications
ls -lrt
The last command ls -lrt will list you the applications you installed ordered from first to last. You have now to delete all the apps you installed right before the spinning wheel appeared after leaving Installer.
for each one of them, do
rm -fR <appname>
<appname> being the application folder you want to delete, like iGame.app
Be very carefull. rm -fR will force deletion of the giving directory name recursively so to ensure all the contents of the specified application directory are deleted. Don't run this from / or the whole iPhone file system will get deleted and you'll have to restore.
Once you deleted the applications that might have caused the problem, you can finally reboot your iPhone by pressing again On/Off and Home for a while. Keep holding On/Off and release Home when the phone turns black and you're back on track.
iPhone, reboots, goes to Apple Logo for a minute and then Springboard.
Hope it helps,
Ka.

Fantastic thanks for this post! Can your message get a sticky or something? It was very hepfull and my iPhone is all better now. however it seems that the second I intall any other app (one) it gets stuck at this screen again? Is there a maximum amount of apps installer supports (I have 5 pages).
Thumbs up!

I have exactly 79 apps at the moment. Is there anyway to get around this silly bug?
