I live in canada and use rogers, i purchased an i phone under the influence that it was unlocked 1.1.1 but soon discovered it to be a 1.1.2. The previous owner had used it for a few weeks in the US and then sold it to me. I am wondering what i need to do. Does the fact that he already used it mean it is unlocked? How do i get my canadian sim card to work so i can use my phone? Any ideas for my first newbie step?
I have seen some other posts but i don't even know if this phone is unlocked or what, it says slide to unlock when i turn it on and then allows me to go into the phone but the message no sim card appears. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

first off, go into settings - about and tell me your firmware version and modem version

Heh, thanks for responding. The modem firmware says 04.02.13_g and the version says 1.1.2 (3b48b), the model is ma501LL. Is that what you wanted?

Thats the latest version that Apple has released so far, which is not unlockable at the moment. If its previously been unlocked then the chance is that the Bootloader version is 3.9. For your sake, i hope it is!

Next you need to check what version the bootloader is. If its 3.9 then its unlockable, but if its 4.2 then you can't unlock it just yet. Do a search in the forums for 'check bootloader'.

Lol, his iPhone is obviously 3.9 bootloader, because of the week 32 of production. Only those of 45+ risk the chance of having 4.6 bootloader.

This is what you have to do:
Downgrade to 1.1.1, if your not already.
Jailbreak it, using www.jailbreakme.com method.
Inside Installer, install Oktoprep.
UPDATE (not Restore) using iTunes to 1.1.2.
Run the 1.1.2 jailbreaker.
Inside Installer, this time, install AnySim 1.2.1u.
Unlock!!

... And it should work.

I'd advise you to edit the message below and REMOVE your serial number. Also send a PM to the guy who quoted it in a later post and have him edit his message to remove the serial also.

It is clear from the week of production that you have the older boot loader. It is possible therefore (I believe) to unlock it using the tutorials in the unlocking section.

Why it has the latest software and BB is because the previous owner updated the iphone to this.

1.Downgrade to 1.1.1, if your not already(download firmware manually, and shift click restore and choose the file)use ibrickr or independence after the error comes up and your phone is restored
2.Jailbreak it, using www.jailbreakme.com method.
3.Inside Installer, install Oktoprep.
4.UPDATE (not Restore) using iTunes to 1.1.2.
5.Run the 1.1.2 jailbreaker.
6.Inside Installer, this time, install AnySim 1.2.1u(SET AUTO-LOCK TO NEVER and MAKE SURE AIRPLANE MODE IS ON BEFORE RUNNING ANYSIM.
7.Unlock!!
