Lightbulb 1.1.2 iPhone NOT SIM locked?

I know that the iPhone is meant to be locked here in the UK.

But the Apple support page says that SOME SIM cards MAY NOT work and it is BETTER to use the one in the phone! it seems to suggest it is optional?

whats going on? Anyone want to ring O2 and ask for the unlock code and see if they give it to you?

    from: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...tnum=306844-uk

    About SIM cards

If you already have a SIM card, note that not all SIM cards work with iPhone. For best results, use the SIM card included with your new iPhone. There is no advantage to taking out your existing SIM and putting it in iPhone.

I didn't know that was even an option!

This is from the online manual for the European iPhone:

    Inserting the iPhone SIM Card

In some regions, you may need to purchase the SIM card separately and insert it into
iPhone before activation. Read the documentation that comes with the SIM card for
    instructions.

If your carrier gave you a PIN number to use with your SIM, you may need to enter the
    PIN before activating iPhone.

Could 1.1.2 have some secret unlocking mechanism? something is going on here!

I think they're referring if you use your old o2 or T-Mobile SIM to activate the iPhone with.

I was under the impression you can ONLY use the SIM card in the phone?

That is what O2's site said and that was my understanding of how it works in the US.

Also the online manual suggests something different to me. It is NOT clear but it makes me wonder...

No, there is nothing going on. In Europe your Provider is giving you a PIN by default. This PIN is for unlocking the SIM card if you are losing your phone. After turning on a phone, you have to enter your PIN to use your SIM card.

Also here in Germany, the sealed box does not include a SIM card, so you will get it when you sign the contract.

My guess is they are just preparing for a general European launch.
Also, rumors are that they will follow the legislation which orders them to also sell unlocked phones. Even if those will cost 1000 euro, they will still have to be supported. So this may just be a reference to the "official" unlocked phones.

Well we need to establish if this is built INTO the 1.1.2 firmware.

If a code exists to unlock the 1.1.2 phones permanently then its a big step on from SIM unlocking using AnySIM or IPSF!

Can someone in the DEV team have a look?

    *sigh*
spinstorm, the ability to unlock the phone has been there since day one. yes the proper way blah blah dont start google iphone and at+pn.

tego, yes in france they must support unlocked phones. no change to the software required (according to apple 250k people can attest to that one)

and when a provider talks about a sim card, its always in teh context of themself as a provider. hence when you read things about sim cards on thier site it is as if no one else uses sim cards. the state you recieve a iphone is that they seem to half activate them and the phone recordes the number on the sim and allows only that one regardless of you putting in another "acceptable" sim.
