after spending a couple days reading these forums i'm still confused as to the big deal about up- or downgrading the bootloader? Im sure in the thousands of posts this has been answered but its never very clear what it all means. So:

If you have a 1.1.2 unlocked phone with BL3.9 and restore to 1.1.4 and unlock what happens?

Will my bootloader get upgraded to 4.6? If so whats the problem with that?

What can you do with BL3.9 that you can't do with BL4.6?

With BL3.9 and an unlocked 1.1.2 iPhone can i just use the do it all function of Ziphone or iliberty + (or use PWNED! when it comes out?)? (ps i dont need instructions on unlocking i read most of it but was just confused about this whole bootloader business)

Whats BL3.9FB?!

Why do people want to up or downgrade their BLs?

If you have an 1.1.2 OTB with 3.9 bootloader you downgraded it.

3.6 is a much better bootloader - iphone dev's can unlock any new firmware that comes out.

4.6 - It's a little harder due to some complication and can only unlock a firmware once a newer firmware is out, i believe.

3.6FB - You can donwgrade your 4.6 bootloader to 3.6FB which is fully reversable so you can go back to 4.6 while the normal 3.6 bootloader isn't reversable.

When you upgrade in iTunes to a higher firmware your bootloader wil never be upgraded as it's dangerous and Apple don't want to take that chance.

Both bootloaders can be unlocked on the firmwares currently.

wicked, thanks. Just to clarify did u mean 3.9 where you wrote 3.6? I've never heard of 3.6 :S

So after i restore to 1.1.4, ill still have my 3.9 Bootloader and i can uncheck all the Downgrade from 4.6 (or unlock using 3.9FB) options when unlocking? Thanks again!

also... when i bought my iPhone it was 1.0.1 and have been updating and unlocking every step of the way. Technically with my 1.1.2 iPhone (current state) should it be bl3.9? or should it be bl4.6? Because you mentioned that i downgraded already but i dont ever remember downgrading?




PS: does anyone know if i already have bl3.9 on a 1.1.2 can i just uncheck "downgrade from 4.6" or "unlock using BL3.9FB"?
