1.1.1 to 1.1.4 (on mac): howto/backup?
i am currently on 1.1.1 (04.01.13_G) and would like to update to 1.1.4.
i heard i should just restore to 1.1.4 via itunes, but didn't find confirmation so far. i wanted to restore anyways so is this the way to go?
also, is there a way to backup my text messages and "keychain" items (wifi passwords etc.) on a mac? can i just keep some of my *.plists?
thanks a ton.

Yeap... that's the way to go. Just restore (not update) to 1.1.4 via iTunes, then jailbreak, activate and unlock. The easiest way for me was ZiPhoneOSX.app.
Then you have an option to install:
- BSD Subsystem, SSH, Terminal, etc.
or
- Cydia, Fake BSD, Terminal (via Cydia), etc.
In my case the second scenario worked perfect. ;-)
As the backing up text messages goes...
there is an app. that does that (as far as I remember it collects them and sends via email). However you'll have to "find" it since I never needed it I don't remember the source (rep) it's on ;-)

I went through the same procedure a few weeks ago. I restored to 1.1.4 using iTunes, then used iNdependence to Jailbreak and Unlock. It installed SSH and BSD for me. I then used iTunes to sync all the backed up stuff (including SMS). I heard somewhere that you were supposed to start fresh and not re-sync, but I've had no trouble with that. Not sure about how to back up "keychain" stuff though.

i didn't know that itunes does re-sync almost all data back to your iphone after you restore to the current firmware. i did get my sms, call history, wallpapers, notes and apparently all my "keychain" stuff, my wifi passwords and whatnot.
activated, jailbreaked :p and unlocked with iplus2.0.
worked like a charm.
