[1.0.2 OTB -> 1.1.4] [Ziphoned] Cracked glass on iPhone. Should I exchange?
Hey all,
Thought I'd get some feedback and recommendations on this.
I have a 1.0.2 OTB iPhone. It's been unlocked and upgraded with independence, jailbreakme.com, and ziphone throughout it's life. I virginized before each upgrade. I'm now on 1.1.4 ziPhoned.
The phone got dropped VERY hard in a parking lot and has some dents, and the glass on the front is cracked. The crack is not affecting the function of the phone, but, you know, it's cracked and not a smooth, sleek, sexy looking iphone no more.
So, since I have applecare I'm pretty sure I can virginize the phone, upgrade to 2.0 (just to make it all nice and cleanly) and then take it in and get a refurbished phone in return. However, if I do that I'm also pretty sure I'll be:
1) Losing my nice, liberal, 3.9 bootloader and getting a 4.6 bootloader.
2) Losing my nice, unlocked 1.1.4 firmware and getting a pre-loaded 2.0 firmware in return. (I'm on T-Mobile US and not planning to change anytime soon)
Item 2 means that I won't be doing this exchange until after the version 2.0 unlock is released, so I have time to collect opinions from the group.
Is 4.6 going to make my life more difficult, or is 4.6 now as easy to unlock as 3.9?

dude BL 4.6 is as easy to unlock as 3.9 right now, so you can stop worring about that.
Regarding FW2.0 there is no problem with that since you can downgrade very easy with no problems.
So go to your apple store and exchange you iphone, you will have no problems with the refurbished one.
mm and by teh way stay away from ziphone check this thread:

Yeah, I'm all aware of the ziPhone shennanegins. Been thinking about restoring the phone and geting ziPhone completely out of the picture since before this happened.
I've read some threads on downgrading. Apparently you can downgrade the Firmware, but the baseband stays at 04.05.05_G (the 2.0 baseband). I'm doing more research to find out if that presents a problem for unlocking.
Thank you for the response. Much appreciated.

Broken pixels---want to exchange---instructions?
Purchased new on 12.2007, 4.6, 1.1.2 OTB. The picture/screen has broken pixels and I'd like to return for repair, exchange or get a refurbished phone.
Currently using T-Mobile, jailbroken and unlocked with "Z". Can someone tell me what steps I need to take to put phone back in original configuration and what to expect from the Apple Store, when I return it with original receipt, since I never registered it with ATT?

I'm on a mac. Here's what I did to get rid of Zibri (over the past hour).
1) I downloaded the 1.1.4 restore file. Search google for "iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw"
2) I put the phone into DFU mode (hold down the power and home button until you see the dock connector -> arrow -> itunes logo.) This step might be unecessary.
3) In iTunes 7.5, I went to the iPhone screen and held option + clicked Restore. I selected the 1.1.4 restore ipsw and clicked ok.
iTunes restored FW 1.1.4
4) I put my TMobile SIM in the phone and it was still unlocked. So I went into terminal and typed "/Applications/ZiPhoneOSX.app/Contents/Resources/ziphone -e" This runs the iErase command (which completely deletes the baseband.
5) I checked the iPhone (Settings, General, About) and yes, the modem firmware was non-existent.
6) I restored 1.1.4 again (as I did above).
7) I insterted my SIM, but it didn't do anything unusual. Wanted to be activated. So I turned on iLiberty, Jailbreak, Activate, and then put my Tmobile SIM in the phone. It said "horrible, horrible SIM. Stopit! Get it out of me! I'm an iPhone! You're supposed to love me!!!!"
Okay, not really.
It show's a no-bar signal with no carrier name or Edge logo. Calls also fail.
I'm a little concerned that it's not saying "invalid sim" like it used to, but everything tells me it's virginized.

the baseband can also be downgraded using bootneuter, that way you'll end up with a full 1.1.4 FW and baseband

Really? That sucks. What am I buying Applecare FOR?
I'll give it a try, though (after going through my applecare agreement with a hi-lighter). Can't wind up with anything worse than I've got now.
Thanks for the note.

best thing for you to say is that sometimes, make a nice number like 40% of the time, or when i need it most. say that the touchscreen doesnt work or responds slowly. THats what i said to get it exchanged. Give it a shot good luck
