I would just like to make a mention that the £10 per month bolt on for unlimited data and access to The Cloud WiFi hotspots is a really good deal for old iPhone users That is if you hardly use the phone for anything else.

Be interesting to know if an o2 simplicity sim will work without it being hacked...

edit - the customer service bloke said the normal web bolt on is acceptable.

the o2 customer service bloke said to leave it a few days as there is three days work maintance work on the activation servers

edit - going to try anyway. ive started the restore process. do i need to worry if about english v us firmware? - i want it to default to o2 rather than at&t i guess?

Put the O2 sim in before you connect to iTunes and it might show O2 and not AT&T. Firmwares are not country specific.

edit: doesn't work. They must use IMEI to identify which carrier sold the phone.

I tried that on my American iPhone and it didn't work.
