The only really good solution we had before was fring. They say they are working on a version for the new firmware, see http://www.fring.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6756
Last week they said it's "still in a work in progress." (http://www.fring.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7548). No timeline; looks like we'll have to wait.

Meanwhile, the developer of Siphon said he began beta-testing two weeks ago: http://code.google.com/p/siphon/issues/detail?id=24
He hasn't released anything since May, but who knows.

All other solutions are not really "normal" VoIP. Truphone (AppStore; see http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=45837) is a relatively expensive service and can't run in the background (since AppStore policy doesn't allow that), so you can't be called and it doesn't work with Skype or SIP. Other services incur costs elsewhere: some make Skype call your phone (at the cost of Skype credit), like the IM thing; for some you must make a GSM phone call to a line that connects you to Skype, like the RF.com thing (which works only in the US and Canada anyway), etc.

Patience is still the magic word... unless someone has found something good?

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

There's now an official version of fring (the Skype/SIPclient). Unfortunately, it's an offical AppStore application. So it won't run in the background to be called, and it can't use the 3G or EDGE/GPRS connection. See http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?p=353246 (different thread, beacuse it's not a "toolchain app" but an AppSore app now).

    Default Skype for Canadians

    Hey peeps

Does anyone have any suggestions on how a Canadian might get access to the Skype app that is currently available to all other iphone users in the world except Canadians? Any tried and proven methods?

    Thanks

    Pete
