Starting again doesn't seem to work for me. Haven't tried a headset yet but I did call my SIP # and it rang on my phone - and I could answer - but still not talk (maybe with the headset - I'll report back).

    Exciting none-the-less!

    Boing!

Apparently it's supposed to work with the headset only (says the author, Samuel Vinson). And it can also be stopped by pressing the Home button a bit longer, 2-5 seconds, he says.

Default Truphone launches its VoIP client

Truphone announced its VoIP client for the iPhone somewhere around November 2007. They posted a YouTube video where they made a demo call.

I don't know whether they were lying about the state of their application, or started thinking a bit late and decided to wait for the official App Store -- anyway, it has taken them a full 8 months (!!!) to come up with their application. It is in the App Store, in the Travel category.

Now how good is this? The tariffs are relatively high (over two times the Skype-Out rates, and even farther above the rates at the cheapest SIP providers). Obviously the app can't run in the background (Apple won't allow it), so receiving calls is practically a no-no. Compatibility with Skype: no. With SIP: no. Connecting over the 3G connection: don't know (wouldn't Apple get in trouble with the phone companies?). But at least the application is free.

Has anyone tried it? How is the sound quality? Better than Siphon?

Well thats sucks already - I hope Skype are planning on getting in on the act. As much aflak as SKype gets - it is always stable and popular, hasnt let me down in the three years ive been using it

Anybody know if Skype are developing an app? I mean the doors for VOIP are clearly open after Apple allowed this in

All they are willing to say is "I cannot confirm anything". http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=148621

That's not very promising. If it were in Skype's hands, they'd announce it. So they may be in a tough negotiation with Apple, who may be in a tough negotiation with the phone companies, who are afraid of losing revenue...

I tried Truphone, and apart from the rates being a little on the higher side, the sound quality is amazing. Ive had them with my old Nokia N80, and used to carry that phone when im going away from home cause Truphone wasnt available on the iPhone. But now the sound is so clear, i have to say much clearer than my T-Mobile USA gsm sound.
There are no breakups during the call like Skype on Fring 1.1.4 used to have, its stable.
As i said, the only downside is the rate pricing... knowing the calls to most of the countries used to be completely FREE... Try it yourself, when you install the truphone, you automatically get $4.00 bonus, so you can test it yourself.

Thats good to know! Im sure Skype will be in on the act also soon!

I cant use Truphone- my country is listed in the app but it doesnt except my phone number saying it doesnt look right!! In my country our mobile and landline numbers are only 5 digits (we have no area code)
hence the app wont let me proceed!! WOuld have thought since my country is listed they would have done research on the number format!

Hello everybody, I am a subscriber to VoIP telephone/fax service. I just recently found out that my present fax machine is not VoIP compatible. I would like to know if there is an adapter that would convert VoIP back to analog to allow me to use my current fax machine which is MFC-210CZ. Is there an adapter to convert VoIP back to analog? Thank you very much in advance.
