Hm, all i did was download the siphon 1.13 app from installer, and as mentioned several pages earlier, added
    194.120.0.198 freephonie.net
to the end of the hosts file. I have an account with freecall and I used my account info in siphon. Connected rightaway, just made a test call, could hear fine on ohter end, on my iphone had to attach earphones and can hear out of the left one.

Thats for those that needed an example.

Touchmods Siphon 1.0 is the latest version for the iphone.
Touchmods Voip-Sip 1.2 is the latest version for the ipodtouch.
if u use voip-sip 1.2 on ur iphone, u wont be able to hear anything.
also using the default freephonie acc on siphon 1.0 is not a practical example.
has anyone got voipstunt, voipbuster and many other non-freephonie accounts on their Siphon 1.0 iphone?
also, the changes on the source page for siphon is indeed just moving around stuff and no noticeable changes.
i guess samuel is not interested in improving the app and the fork with touchmods has costed him dearly.
so he must be just waiting for someone else to take over the project and wasting time by moving stuff around in the source.
this is a gr8 app for the iphone and has tremendous potential.
i hope touchmods reconsider working on this app, now that its open source.

I have tried the current version; it's time-limited and doesn't connect right and has lousy sound.

Touchmods will not consider working on it; they have just decided to stop working on it. It has been a problem for them from the beginning, because they couldn't figure out a way to make money off it. That hasn't changed.

The SDK will probably allow Skype to put together a client, and maybe some commercial SIP clients may surface, but that can only happen when the full SDK with full licenses becomes widely available; the dressed-down beta version lacks too many interfaces with the phone frameworks. And it will be a call-out only application because it can't run in the background.

So altogether it's looking dim for VoIP on iPhone at the moment. It will remain one of the few smartphones without any VoIP capabilities for the foreseeable future.

Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

    Hi

I am currently try to get familiar with my iphone and like to use VOIP.
As I read that for the iPhone would only work Touchmods Siphon 1.0 I was looking in the installer using the classicla touchmods source but only having found the ipod-version not the iphone version. Do you know the source? I have an voipcheap account. I tried to find the source in the internet but haven't found nothing yet

    Thanks and regards

    Default Movement in Siphon

There is some movement going on in the Siphon arena. See http://code.google.com/p/siphon/source/list

It seems the developer has got around to attacking the application's problems. In the past two weeks, he has changed the way the volume is handled, moved all the settings from the application to the iPhone's built-in Settings menu, and generally improved integration with the iPhone's systems -- for example by using the phone's built-in numeric pad.

Though there isn't a version that can be downloaded (not even a beta version) at the moment, this looks better than ever. He's still reporting problems, but if he keeps working on it like this, we'll have a true working Siphon before long.

It's been another three weeks and the next steps seem to be taken. The Siphon developers were obviously trumped by Fring, which has managed to be the first working (not just running) iPhone VoIP client. But they haven't given up -- good for them. In the past hours, developer Samuel Vinson has put up instructions for the compilation of Siphon on the development site. In the two weeks before, he made many changes and addressed problems with the application. It's been active development!

Since there is now a compilation guide up, it can't be too long before the application is released (hopefully).

    Default Siphon released

An alpha version of Siphon was released two days ago at http://code.google.com/p/siphon/downloads/list

I downloaded it and copied the files over to their proper locations, but it didn't really work (couldn't make contact with the SIP server). Maybe I got some of the settings wrong, or it can't work on 1.1.2.

Has anyone tried to get it working?

Unhappy Be cautious before installing Siphon - replacing SpringBoard.app

I'd be very cautious about this. His installation instructions at:

    http://code.google.com/p/siphon/wiki/ManualInstallation

    Require that you replace SpringBoard.app.

"Copy dist/SpringBoard.app into /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app on your device."

That's crazy as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure he's got some good reason why he's doing that but it seems like a fundamentally bad idea to start replacing core components of the device for one app. Smells like a recipe for disaster later on.

    Boing!

It should only copy two icons that are in dist/SpringBoard.app into the SpringBoard folder; it's not supposed to replace anything. With a command like cp -R dist/SpringBoard.app /System/Library/CoreServices/ this would probably work without a problem.

It does seem that this is for the iPod Touch... again.....
