Default The limited unlimited version is out

Touchmod's pas-de-deux with freephonie.net is over. They have released a version that can be used with any SIP-VoIP provider. It is on the repository http://touchmods.net/rep.xml (in the Touchmods category).

Strangely, they are challenging everyone to hack the application to remove the two-week time limit. See http://touchmods.wordpress.com/2008/...hack-the-hack/. I guess they haven't been very successful in locking up the application securely, so they might as well make a game out of it. Or the sound is still so bad that it's all theoretical anyway.

If you have tried it out, how's the sound this time?

    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

No, sorry, you need the thing called Siphon.

    Default More news from Touchmods

Apparently they are creating a separate "Siphon" development team to develop the iPhone VoIP application. And they say: "Every future Touchmods App will be free and non-locked." The reason is that the aims are too different between iPod Touch and iPhone versions. See http://touchmods.wordpress.com/2008/02/27/fork-art/

Am I being very paranoid if I analyse this to the letter and conclude that the future Touchmods app, i.e. only the one for the iPod Touch, will be free, and the one for the iPhone could still be a paid app? The "aim" of the Touch app was to sell microphones, whereas the aim for Siphon will be to sell applications? It would explain why they're considering open source only for the Touch version.

    We'll see...

    Thanks for the detailed info.
I saw that Siphon thing on the installer, didn't realise it was the VoIP/SIP client.

    Will give it a try.

hack the hack is over ...

    /Update2

    Hey, it (kinda) works!

I'm able to establish a communication both ways (initiate call and receive calls)

    BUT

I don't hear anything on the iphone, nor do I hear the iPhone (on the other phone)

    AND

settings are lost every time I close the app !

Anyway, keep up the good work, I'm looking forward for next beta

    /Update3
Ok I managed to overcome the lost settings by launching Siphone from termnal (as root).
I guess chmod +755 accounts.xml would also do the trick.

    Default Siphon becomes open source

It has become clear from comments on Touchmod's website that they had a fight with the developer of the iPhone version ("Siphon"). This Samuel (who, it turns out, works for.... free.fr, the VoIP provider to which the earlier version was locked), did not want to create the same kind of open application that they had for the iPod Touch. They say: "we could not agree with samuel (the coder who did the iPhone hack), and he decided to go his way most probably for a commercial application."

So my paranoia (see above) was justified: "Every future Touchmods App will be free and non-locked" really meant only the iPod Touch application (made by Touchmods) and not the one for the iPhone (made by Samuel).

In a radical turn of events, this Samuel has now... open-sourced Siphon! The complete source code can be downloaded from http://siphon.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ .

This probably means that it will be free and unlimited after all. And that now maybe the sound issues can be resolved. All the smart developers can add their wisdom to the project, whose home is http://code.google.com/p/siphon/.

A good move, finally, after more than two months!

The new version should work with any provider. With very low sound, though.
