Hi Shirk, I just wanted to let you know that i have been using 'srelay' to tether my iphone to my MBP for a couple of months now and just stumbled on your xsrelay app this morning. With srelay, i would get that pesky NSURLError:-1 all the time. I havent seen it once while using your xsrelay. I dont do anything fancy with it, just start it up via VT100 terminal and create an ad hoc netowkr on my MBP to connect up the iPhone. I'm using an iPhone running 1.1.4 and JB'd with the latest ziphone. The point of my reply was to simply thank you for this app! Works great in a pinch when I have no net access! Keep up the good work...

Thank you so much for this app!! I tried using srelay but with no luck. But with xrelay and bossprefs plugin, man this thing is a blast!

Thanks again. Looking forward to your new implementation in the future...

when I first got my iphone I tried tethering.

It would be great if I didn't have to do anything, If I could just click a button on my mac and then a window would pop up on my iphone and after selecting yes/no, it would work.

I haven't tried your current tethering options.

If there is a guide on how to do it, step-by-step, i'll give it a try.

convince iphonefreakz.com or appleiphoneschool.com to write a guide on it.

I tried xsrelay yesterday for the first time.

I tried a lot of times to tether the iPhone with my Macbook Pro, using tinyproxy, srelay, to which I added Z's BindDNS port. It worked, more or less, with the common DNS issues.

Having xsrelay and the bosspref plugin available is really a good thing:
    * you simply start xsrelay on the iPhone
    * you setup a private ad-hoc Wifi network between the Mac and the iPhone
    * you setup the Mac so that it uses a Socks V4 proxy for every outgoing connection
    * if you use Safari or Mail, it works out of the box. For Mozilla products (Firefox, Thunderbird) you have to tell it to use the aforementioned proxy.
    * in order to be more or less stealth, I also used the "User-Agent" Firefox extension so that my provider doesn't see I'm tethering (which I shouldn't do, regarding my plan general conditions and terms...)

I got 200kbits downstream, and a pretty weak upload speed (60kbits!) but that's not a 3G+ USB key, after all. It works.

I guess it would work with Windows too, but I guess I need to setup a fake proxy server on the PC to relay everything to xsrelay.

Many thanks to Shirk for that almost perfect solution!

    hey all,
i tryed to set up xsrelay to use my iphone with fw 1.1.4 as a gprs modem, but somehow it just won't work properly.
I installed xsrelay and the bossprefs plugin.
set up a ad-hoc network and got the connection to work with static ips.
also i changed the proxy preferences in my firebox browser.
after connection via the ad-hoc network I start putty and connect to my iphone, even entering acc. & pass works without any problems.
pinging the iphone via putty works as well.
but still: When I open Firefox it just doesn't load a website?!?!
Do I have to put in a DNS-Server Adresse somewhere maybe?
    I used this tutorial:
    http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/03/iphonetethering.html
OS is winXP, maybe someone can help me out.

    cheers!

Any chance of this being ported to iPhone 2.0? Cydia? I love xsrelay.

I second that. It doesn't seem to be maintained anymore tho...
    Shirk, if you hear us...

EDIT: the SSH tunnel trick still works, in the mean time, even if not a practical solution

    Heya,

    long time no see.
As for the 1.1.X Xsrelay - yes it is currently 'unmaintained' which basicly means I took down the apptapp repo.
For 2.0 I'll provide a port for cydia ASAP
(I'm in the middle of reinstalling webservers..)
