Oh yeah. And that calculator app...nonsense...actually a remote control for your tv. And have you guys tried the popcorn popper? Honestly, I think the coffee maker is a little slow, but what do you want for a cell phone?

No, the iPhone does not have infrared, unless one person knows more then the other tens of thousands of us, and the infrared module is somehow invisible.

what about that sensor that puts the screen to black when you aproach the iPhone near the ear part in the middle of a call ?

that could be infrared, but i don't know, some one should confirm if this is made with infrared.

For those of you who make fun of others so easily:

And yes, there is infrared in the iPhone, in case you don't want to follow the link.

That's a cool video! He's right! I thought it simply sensed the upward motion -- but it's infrared .....

You can see the infrared sensor if you call somebody and then take a digital camera and look at your iPhone. The sensor is right above the earspeaker. I took a photo where you can see the infrared led:

So yes, if you use the term "infrared sensor" very loosely, then yeah, the iPhone has infrared.

But no. You're not going likely to ever get a infrared temperature sensor or even a infrared data transfer out of it. Why? For the same reason that your TV's Sharp GP1Ux infrared reciever (or whatever your TV uses) will never be a temperature sensor or ever do irDA.

Infrared devices are built for various purposes, and general purpose inputs on processors are costly to make complex interfaces with. This one's either an ambient light sensor or, less likely a very cheap and crappy heat sensor. It's designed to say "yes, it's likely that there's somebody's head close to me" and that's it. Just a simple yes/no flag. Not, "oh, hmm, this guy's got a fever of 102."
