Default Speech Recogonition on the iPhone

In my opinion one of the things that's really missing from the iPhone in my opinion is support for voice control. Since I work for a company that implements speech recognition based applications on many mobile phones (VoiceSignal Technologies), I got together with a couple of colleagues and ported our speech engine to the iPhone. We have released videos of two of our demo applications:

    VTunes: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/talk-to-m...nal-292344.php

This scans the music library on the iPhone and lets you select tracks by simply speaking the name of the artist. This is really the same technology that we use for voice dialing. The recognition is performed on the phone.

    VSearch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayrCCw5xWug

This is a voice-enabled local search system. All of the recognition is actually performed on one of our server systems and we communicate via TCP/IP. The interaction is very similar to a Directory Assistance phone call (like 411 in the USA). The user specifies a city and state and a business listing (by category or directly by name). The results are presented in the iPhone Maps application. Our recognition server has the full list of 15+ million US businesses.

I hope you like these demos.

Many thanks to the fine folks on #iphone-dev who made all this possible by figuring out how to get third party apps on the iPhone.
