Talking SMSD: Mass texting to 178 people, results

I just sent a mass text to 178 people using SMSD. The text took about 20 or 30 minutes to fully send to everyone. In the text I asked whoever got it to respond by texting back "got it". Well it's been about 2 hours now and I've gotten at least 150 "got it"s, so mass texting does indeed work well!

I'd like to report a small bug though. The first time I tried to send it, while it was sending I got some texts saying "Got it" that popped up in that little blue window with the option to Ignore or View. Well, I hit Ignore and the application froze. After about 5 minutes the phone soft reset and only about 30 or 40 people had been texted, so I had to resend it from where it left off. So, don't hit Ignore (or View for that matter) on a received text while the mass text is sending!

Now an annoyance. My outbox is completely flooded with the same text 178 times. It would be a nice feature to have the option to not save the sent text in my outbox 178 times. (My inbox was also flooded but that's my own fault for asking everyone to respond.)

Thanks to all who helped make this app possible, it is way cool.

EDIT: Ok I found another pretty big bug! I studied the numbers of over 20 people that never responded to the text, and the number format was different than all the others that did respond.

Those who got the text, SMSD had changed their number format to "+1 (###) ###-####"
Those who DIDN'T respond, SMSD had left their number format normal as "(###) ###-####"

Would an easy fix to this be to manually add "+1" in front of all the numbers before I send the text, to make sure everyone gets the text? Or would some end up with +1 +1 (two +1's) and end up not getting the text? I don't understand this +1 business, but it must be important...

By the way, I'm on T-Mobile, if that makes a difference

Hi wildonrio, did you send one message to multiple contacts or just one for each?

This thread makes me suggest a feature implementation:

delivery-receipt.... but instead of having them like on old phones when the message gets delivered you get another message, it would be cool to group them, and just flag the sent delivered message in the outbox, in either grey (pending delivery) or black (delivered), something like that? Accessing the individual message gives you the sent time and delivery rcpt time...

IIRC the nokia e61 does this... so I assume the network sends some sort of SMS id which is unique when sending and when getting the rcpt...

I sent the same messsage to all 178 people, asking them to respond "got it" if they got it. 140-150 got the message and 20-30 didn't. The 20-30 that didn't I noticed that their number didn't have a +1 in front. Those who got the message, SMSD had tacked a +1 in front of their number. Go figure.

Piranha (or anyone else for that matter),

Can you explain this +1 business to me?

    1. Why does the number need a +1 to be able to receive the message?
    2. Why did SMSD randomly choose 20-30 numbers to NOT put the +1 in front of, which ended up not receiving the message?
    3. If I manually put a +1 in front of every number, will that guarantee that everyone gets the message?

the "+1" is the country code
when i receive a call those numbers formated as +91 xxxxxxxxxx the name of the contact shows up
im from india so my country codes +91
those formated as xxxxxxxxxx the name does not show up

    this is weird

the iphone only recognizes contacts as we recieve the number

when u receive a call from a number u dont know u will always see the country code forllowed by the area code(if from a land line) and then the number
well thats how it works in indai so i guess its the same everywhere

+1 is the country code for the US if im not mistaken????

Further testing revealed that when I send the message, it appears as (###) ###-#### and when I receive a response, it changes it to +1 (###) ###-####. So the +1 has nothing to do with SMSD, and the 20-30 who didn't respond could likely have gotten it and just didn't respond.
