    Default [REQ] Wikipedia Reader

I don't know if anyone else had thought about this, but I use wikipedia *all* the time. However, it's quite fiddly to use on mobile safari. Don't get me wrong, it is usable, but it'd be so much nicer to have a custom application to reformat everything to the correct screen size etc. automagically, and also to avoid the extraneous stuff (search, random pages, featured articles etc) that I imagine could be done as on the youtube application? It may in fact be very easy to do this with jiggy it occurs to me...

    Just a thought!

I personally would love to see a native wikipedia app to read dumped databases offline.

it's funny that you have mentioned it, because I just seen an article on Digg about how to put the wikipedia database on your ipod, it contains instructions. So I guess the next step would be to create an app that can read the format that the database is in and then just hook it up to a search. Just as a note though, the Wikipedia database is about 1.7 GB, so this would prob. only for people that doesn't care about the space in their phone. Infact, thinking about it, it might not be possible because of the space alloted outside of the music.

There are many free Wikipedia databases which are available in different sizes. For example,

    http://revolution.cx/Lexipedia/LexipediaDownAlt.htm
    http://www.tomeraider.com/book_detai...=652&abslink=1
    http://www.tomeraider.com/?Searchstr...ookDetails:616

A database for weDict would work too. There seem to be some databases here, but don't know which one to install.

Hey, not sure on the format of those dictionaries. Wedict requires .dict, .idx and .idxc files to work. The closest I've seen is on this site http://www.sdict.com/en/wikipedia.php
Its a 3 part file of wikipedia with a .dct extension. I renamed it to .dict and it showed up in wedict, but wouldnt give me any results when I searched it. Either this is because it is not a .dict file or its the missing .idx and .idxc files... or both
It should be relatively easy for someone to write a script to get it into the right format but I dont know how to. We need a dictionary geek!

I would like to see this as well. I have tried the TOmeraider version on my Treo, but that was unsearchable... far too slow and only results one page at a time.
What I'd like to see is a front end similar to the Wiki website... perhaps, given that the iPhone can run a webserver, actually load a slightly modified version of the Wikipedia website locally and search a local database dump quickly just like the online version. This would be ideal.

Just use wapedia. It's a mobile-phone-optimized version of Wikipedia.

Can this be installed as an offline database?

    Hi all.

I've been having a working version as well for a couple days now but didn't take the time to package it nicely.

It's also based on the bzip2recover solution, but uses a 100% pure php search engine instead of Xapian, which is very decent and only takes about 180Mb of index instead of 1.5Gb! It's based on an adaptation of the excellent Risearch PHP to make it work with a flat title list file instead of HTML pages. It doesn't have relevance percentages though, which would be a pitty on full-text indexes but is OK for short texts like titles. I do always print a link if an exact match exists though. I'm quite happy with it really. Besides, building the index is done with one perl script + 1 php script meaning cross-platform and no compilation (but it does rely on the Unix 'sort' which is good with large files, so on Windows you need cygwin, which I believe you need for bzip2recover anyway). It takes about 1h30 to build the index for me.

However I admit my wiktext parser (the one suggested at http://users.softlab.ece.ntua.gr/~tt...iaOffline.html) is not great, and support of non-latin characters is poor.
