All of this silly nonsense about connecting over the WLAN is so much hot air. There are many situations where that is just too cumbersome or impossible. And there is no reason why an iPhone, which is basically a little Unix machine, cannot act as a mass storage device as can many other (even Windows Mobile) phones. Of course Apple doesn't ship it with this capability. The closest we have is the thread on connecting to the iPhone via SSH over the USB cable. But even that is a second best (although ingenious) work around to the inherent lack of this functionality.

I'd hope this thread be stickied too in the hope some enterprising and talented soul can look into what can be done.

I'm another one who would love this feature. It's already partly done with the way it shows up on "my computer" under xp as a camera. This allows read only access to the photo folder, so if we could get write access to that folder direct from windows then that's 90% of the job done!

i'm not a mac user so dunno if they have the same functionality?

I've been hankering after a solution to using an iPhone as a native USB mass storage device since I bought one. As mentioned, WiFi is a clunky and often unrealistic option.

The best solution I've found, which again is far from ideal, is using the standalone ZIP distribution of iPhoneBrowser (or another relevant app if you're on OSX/Linux): iphonebrowser - Google Code ...then replacing the .zip extension with .jpg and placing it in the /var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE folder on the iPhone so that it shows up when connected to a computer via USB.

Downloading and renaming this file then running iPhoneBrowser gives you full access to the iPhone's file system with a nice drag and drop GUI, albeit in a rather roundabout fashion, and assumes permission to run third party programs on the computer you're targeting.

Still, this method suffices for getting the PDAnet USB tethering client onto machines without WiFi/net access quickly and easily, which accounts for 80% of what I'd be doing with full USB mass storage access anyway.

Just to remind you iPhonebrowser requires iTunes installed[Apple Mobile Device service to be precise) (iTunes <= 8.1.1 , still no new iPhoneBrowser version?). Besides that it also need .NET framework 2.0. That's like 100mb to download! With no network available it's totally screwed.

iPhoneBrowser 1.91 has been out for a week and works with iTunes 8.2.

Most machines already have .NET Framework 2.0 installed, and apparently DiskAid is a standalone app which doesn't require it.

As for iTunes, AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (13MB) can be extracted from the .exe package and loaded individually. I haven't tested it but there's no reason why the above apps wouldn't work with just the Apple device drivers installed.

nice work around ectoplasmosis. like the renaming to jpg bit.

would it be a difficult task to make iphone browser into a portable app? so that it doesnt require any sort of installation or dependancys on other software?
